Cougars Close Out Regular Season at SF State, CSUMB

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (12-10, 9-7 CCAA) wraps up its regular season schedule this weekend, traveling to San Francisco State (19-4, 12-4 CCAA) on Friday and Cal State Monterey Bay (11-9, 5-11 CCAA) on Saturday. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m. 

LAST WEEKEND

  • CSUSM went 0-2 last weekend against two nationally-ranked teams. .
  • The Cougars fell in three sets (17-25, 20-25, 20-25) to previously-No. 4 Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday in The Sports Center.
  • CSUSM dropped a four-set match (25-19, 17-25, 19-25, 20-25) to previously-No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona on Senior Day.
  • Kassy Doering recorded a career-high 18 kills against CPP, finishing the night with a .531 hitting percentage (18k-1e-32ta).
  • Grecia Cordero-Barr collected her 17th double-digit dig performance with 18 against the Broncos.
  • Cordero-Barr and Doering were both honored prior to Saturday's match as they competed in their final match in The Sports Center.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Cougars are tied with Sonoma State in the CCAA standings for fifth place and one match ahead of seventh-place Stanislaus State.
  • Only the top six teams will move on and compete in the CCAA Tournament on Nov. 18-20 at Cal State San Bernardino.
  • Sonoma State dropped a five-setter on Tuesday against newly-No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino and are hosting Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills this weekend.
  • Stanislaus State will end the regular season on the road, traveling to No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona and No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino.
  • Madison Turner remains third in the CCAA with a 10.08 assists per set average, ranking her 44th in the nation.
  • CSUSM continues to be fourth in digs (14.90) and blocks (1.87) per set in the CCAA. 
  • With a 500 total attempts minimum, Doering ranks second in the CCAA with a .341 hitting percentage (253k-61e-563ta).
  • The Cougars' 12 aces against Stanislaus State tied a CCAA high in a three-set match this season. The Warriors set the bar with 12 against Chico State on Oct. 13. 
  • CSUSM's 15 total blocks against Chico State is the most by a CCAA school this season in four sets or less. Sonoma State tallied 15 against Cal State Dominguez Hills in a five-set match. 
  • CSUSM's 52 kills against Fresno Pacific on Sept. 10 rank the highest among CCAA teams in a three-set match this season.
  • Doering's 15 kills and Turner's 30 assists against Cal State East Bay (Oct. 16) rank the highest in the CCAA in a three-set match.

FRIDAY AT SF STATE

  • San Francisco State has already clinched a spot in the 2021 CCAA Tournament.
  • The Gators are third in the CCAA standings, one match behind second-place Cal Poly Pomona. 
  • SF State's four losses were to CSUSM, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State LA and Cal State San Bernardino. 
  • In the last meeting between these two teams, the Cougars pulled off a come-from-behind five-set victory (22-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-13) in The Sports Center. 
  • SF State holds a slight lead in the all-time series at 3-4 and are undefeated against the Cougars when playing at home (3-0). 
  • The Gators split last weekend, dropping a four-set match at Cal State LA before rebounding with a sweep at Cal State Dominguez Hills. 
  • SF State is holding its opponents to a conference-best .168 hitting percentage. 
  • The Gators are leading the CCAA in blocks per set, averaging 2.02 per set (46th in the nation). 
  • Brianna DeBoer is tallying a CCAA-best 4.44 digs per set. 
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Gators were picked to finish tied for fourth with Sonoma State. 

 

REGULAR SEASON FINALE AT CSUMB

  • Cal State East Bay will compete at CSUMB on Friday night. 
  • With a 5-11 CCAA record, the Otters have been eliminated from the conference tournament. 
  • Four of the Otters' 11 CCAA losses were forfeits due to the conference's COVID protocols. Per NCAA regulations, those losses will not be counted on CSUMB's overall record, only the CCAA record. 
  • CSUMB has won four of its last five matches including the program's first-ever sweep over SSU in 32 attempts. 
  • The Cougars opened CCAA play this season with a sweep over the Otters (25-20, 25-22, 25-21). 
  • The Cougars have a 4-2 lead in the all-time series against the Otters, but are 1-2 when playing in the Kelp Bed. 
  • The Otters rank 10th in blocks (1.65) and digs (13.41) per set in CCAA. 
  • Jenna Tobin is leading the Otters in kills per set (3.47) and is second in digs per set (2.59). 
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Otters were picked to finish 11th out of 12 teams.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returned five starters from the 2019 season - Grecia Cordero-Barr (L), Kassy Doering (MB), Micah Hébert (OH), Madison Turner (S) and Emily Vander Weide (OH).
  • Nine will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time in 2021 with the combination of last year's and this year's freshman classes.
  • The 2019 season ended on a high note with the Cougars recording their first-ever CCAA Tournament victory, a five-set thriller over Stanislaus State.
  • CSUSM's 2019 season came to an end in the next match, falling to eventual NCAA Division II National Champion Cal State San Bernardino.
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2019 ranked third in kills per set (13.08), blocks per set (2.12) and digs per set (15.40).
  • Grecia Cordero-Barr was the 2019 CCAA leader in digs per set (4.70) and was second in total digs (437).
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish third.

THE LEONARD FILE

  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her eleventh season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 185-123 (.601) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 16 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 277-247 (.529) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
