Cougars Conclude Home Schedule with Nationally-Ranked Teams

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (12-8, 9-5 CCAA) will play its final two home games of the 2021 regular season this weekend as it faces No. 4 Cal State San Bernardino (18-3, 13-0 CCAA) on Thursday at 7 p.m. and No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona (18-3, 11-3 CCAA) on Saturday at 1 p.m. 

Prior to its final home match against the Broncos, CSUSM will honor its two seniors: Grecia Cordero-Barr and Kassy Doering. 

LAST WEEKEND

  • CSUSM went 2-0 last weekend on the road.
  • The Cougars got revenge on Stanislaus State last Friday, sweeping the Warriors (25-23, 25-19, 25-21) after they dropped a five-set match to them earlier this season in The Sports Center.
  • CSUSM snagged its third consecutive road victory the next night, recording a four-set win at Chico State.
  • The Cougars tallied a NCAA Division II era-best 12 aces against Stanislaus State, only to match it the following night against the Wildcats.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • With the two wins this past weekend, the Cougars are now in fifth place in the CCAA standings.
  • CSUSM has a 1.5-match lead over sixth-place Sonoma State and a two-match lead over seventh-place Stanislaus State. 
  • Madison Turner remains third in the CCAA with a 10.00 assists per set average, ranking her 47th in the nation.
  • CSUSM moved up to fourth in digs (14.90) and blocks (1.93) per set in the CCAA. 
  • Despite being near the bottom in the CCAA, the Cougars registered more than double the number of aces (12) against conference-leading Stanislaus State (5) last Friday night. 
  • Kassy Doering ranks seventh in the CCAA with a .331 hitting percentage.
  • The Cougars' 12 aces against Stan State tied a CCAA high in a three-set match this season. The Warriors set the bar with 12 against Chico State on Oct. 13. 
  • CSUSM's 15 total blocks against Chico State is the most by a CCAA school this season in four sets or less. Sonoma State tallied 15 against Cal State Dominguez Hills in a five-set match. 
  • CSUSM's 52 kills against Fresno Pacific on Sept. 10 rank the highest among CCAA teams in a three-set match this season.
  • Doering's 15 kills and Turner's 30 assists against Cal State East Bay (Oct. 16) rank the highest in the CCAA in a three-set match.

THURSDAY AGAINST NO. 5 COYOTES

  • CSUSB has already clinched a spot in the 2021 CCAA Tournament.
  • With five matches remaining, including a make-up at Sonoma State, the Coyotes are attempting to win their fourth consecutive regular-season championship.
  • The Coyotes are on a 15-match win streak dating back to Sept. 10 when they dropped a five-set match to Rockhurst and were swept by Concordia-St. Paul at the Colorado Premier Challenge in Denver.
  • CSUSB has only dropped four sets in CCAA play, one each time the Coyotes played Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State LA.
  • The Cougars' lone victory over the national powerhouse came on Oct. 13, 2017 when CSUSM clinched a five-set victory (25-19, 25-20, 24-26, 20-25, 15-9) in The Sports Center.
  • CSUSB holds a 10-1 lead in the all-time series and are 4-1 when playing on CSUSM's home court.
  • The Coyotes lead the CCAA in kills (13.87) and digs (15.68) per set.
  • CSUSB's .275 hitting percentage ranks second in the CCAA and seventh in the nation.
  • Two-time CCAA and NCAA West Region Player of the Year Alexis Cardoza is leading the conference and ranks 23rd in the nation in kills per set at 3.87.
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, CSUSB was picked to repeat as CCAA Champions. 

 

SENIOR DAY AGAINST NO. 21 BRONCOS

  • Cal Poly Pomona will compete at Cal State East Bay on Thursday night.
  • The Broncos need just one win to clinch a spot in the 2021 CCAA Tournament.
  • CPP has a slight lead at 6-5 in the all-time series against the Cougars. The series is tied at 2-2 when playing in The Sports Center.
  • Earlier this season, CSUSM was swept (14-25, 13-25, 15-25) by the Broncos in Kellogg Arena.
  • In 2019, the Cougars swept the Broncos both times they faced each other.
  • CPP has lost three matches in CCAA play, twice to CSUSB and once to Cal State LA.
  • The Broncos are currently tied for second in the CCAA standings with San Francisco State.
  • Kira Zimmerman is leading the conference in aces per set (0.51).
  • The Broncos are leading the CCAA in hitting percentage and are ranked fifth in the nation at .284.
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Broncos were picked to finish seventh.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returned five starters from the 2019 season - Grecia Cordero-Barr (L), Kassy Doering (MB), Micah Hébert (OH), Madison Turner (S) and Emily Vander Weide (OH).
  • Nine will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time in 2021 with the combination of last year's and this year's freshman classes.
  • The 2019 season ended on a high note with the Cougars recording their first-ever CCAA Tournament victory, a five-set thriller over Stanislaus State.
  • CSUSM's 2019 season came to an end in the next match, falling to eventual NCAA Division II National Champion Cal State San Bernardino.
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2019 ranked third in kills per set (13.08), blocks per set (2.12) and digs per set (15.40).
  • Grecia Cordero-Barr was the 2019 CCAA leader in digs per set (4.70) and was second in total digs (437).
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish third.

THE LEONARD FILE

  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her eleventh season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 185-121 (.605) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 16 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 277-247 (.529) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
