CSUSM Ready for CCAA Home Openers Against SSU, SFSU

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men’s soccer team (1-6-1, 0-1-1 CCAA) will continue CCAA play by hosting Sonoma State (4-4-1, 0-1-1 CCAA) on Friday at 3 p.m. and San Francisco State (4-4-1, 0-1-1 CCAA) on Sunday at 2 p.m.

LAST WEEKEND

  • The Cougars began last weekend on a good note with a 0-0 draw against No. 13 Humboldt State to begin CCAA play.
  • CSUSM ended the weekend with a 1-0 heartbreaker against Chico State on Sunday as the Wildcats broke the scoreless stalemate with 35 seconds remaining in the second half.
  • The last time CSUSM held a ranked team to a 0-0 tie was against No. 9 UC San Diego in 2018.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM’s .771 save percentage ranks 40th nationally and fifth in the CCAA.
  • Goalkeeper Jesus Mentado’s 36 total saves ranked second in the CCAA and 37th in Division II while his 4.5 saves per game rank 39th nationally and fourth in the conference.

CCAA HOME OPENER AGAINST THE SEAWOLVES

  • Friday’s game against SSU will be the first since 2018 as the 2019 game was cancelled due to wildfires in Northern California.
  • CSUSM is 0-2-1 in the all-time series against SSU and 0-1-1 at home.
  • In the last matchup between the Cougars and Seawolves, the game ended in a 1-1 tie at The Cage.
  • SSU began CCAA play with a 1-1 tie against Cal Poly Pomona before taking a 1-0 loss to Cal State LA last weekend.
  • Sean Rohane leads the Seawolves with 11 points at three goals and a team-leading five assists.
  • The Seawolves are putting 7.56 shots on goal per game – second most in the CCAA and 18th most nationally.

SUNDAY AGAINST THE GATORS

  • The Cougars are 1-4-1 in the all-time series against the Gators and are 1-2 when playing in San Marcos.
  • CSUSM will be looking to snap a three-game skid against SFSU.
  • CSUSM’s lone win in the series came in 2015 as the Cougars posted a 3-0 shutout against the Gators at The Cage.
  • SFSU began CCAA play with a 3-1 loss to Cal State LA before earning a point with a 2-2 tie against Cal Poly Pomona last weekend.
  • Gustavo Ferrari leads the Gators with nine goals, four assists, 22 points and 27 shots.
  • At one goal per game, Ferrari leads the CCAA and ranks sixth nationally.
  • Gator keeper Matias Herrera Fuentes is putting up 5.0 saves per game this season – second most in the CCAA and 18th most nationally.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • With the 2020 and 2021 newcomers combined, the Cougars have 16 players wearing a CSUSM uniform for the first time.
  • The Cougars have 13 returners from the 2019 squad and are fronted by forward Juan Camilo Salazar, who led the Cougars with six goals, 13 points and a season-record 64 shots.
  • CSUSM was picked to finish sixth in the 2021 CCAA Men’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE PULVERS FILE

  • This season marks the 16th season for head coach Ron Pulvers at CSUSM.
  • Pulvers has a 118-99-26 (.539) record as CSUSM's head men's coach.
  • In 24 seasons as a collegiate head men's soccer coach, Pulvers holds a 244-170-40 (.581) career record.
  • He was 84-42-24 (.640) while in charge of the CSUSM women's program.
  • From 2006-13, Pulvers led both the CSUSM men's and women's soccer teams.
