CSUSM Travels to Northern California This Weekend

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team will travel to Stanislaus State on Friday before moving farther north for a matchup against Chico State on Saturday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. 

LAST WEEKEND

  • CSUSM (10-8, 7-5 CCAA) went 1-1 last weekend on the road. 
  • The Cougars were swept (17-25, 22-25, 20-25) by Cal State LA on Friday night. 
  • The Cougars rebounded with a four-set victory (25-14, 15-25, 25-19, 25-17) over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the Torodome on Saturday. 
  • For the weekend, Kassy Doering led the Cougars with 3.43 kills per set, 24 kills, seven digs and five blocks. 

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • With six matches remaining, the Cougars are in sixth place in the CCAA standings
  • CSUSM has a one-match lead over seventh-place Stanislaus State and is a half-match behind fifth-place Sonoma State.
  • Six of CSUSM's final eight games are on the road. The Cougars' final two home games are on Nov. 4 vs. Cal State San Bernardino and Nov. 6 against Cal Poly Pomona.
  • Kassy Doering is leading the charge for CSUSM in blocks, ranking fourth in the CCAA with a 0.91 blocks per set average. 
  • Madison Turner is third in the CCAA with a 10.05 assists per set average, ranking her 41st in the nation.
  • CSUSM ranks fifth in the CCAA in digs with 15.00 per set
  • Kassy Doering ranks fourth in the CCAA with a .342 hitting percentage.
  • CSUSM's 15 total blocks against Chico State is the most by a CCAA school this season in four sets or less. Sonoma State tallied 15 against Cal State Dominguez Hills in a five-set match. 
  • CSUSM's 52 kills against Fresno Pacific on Sept. 10 rank the highest among CCAA teams in a three-set match this season.
  • Doering's 15 kills and Turner's 30 assists against Cal State East Bay (Oct. 16) rank the highest in the CCAA in a three-set match.

TAKING A TURN IN TURLOCK

  • The Cougars continue their four-match road series on Friday at Stanislaus State. 
  • CSUSM holds a 5-3 lead in the all-times series against the Warriors.
  • The Cougars dropped a five-set match (25-18, 22-25, 25-14, 19-25, 11-15) in The Sports Center on Oct. 2.
  • Stan State dropped back-to-back matches last weekend starting with a four-set loss at SF State on Friday before falling in five at Cal State Monterey Bay.
  • The Warriors are in seventh place in the CCAA standings, one game behind the Cougars.
  • Stan State ranks second behind Cal State San Bernardino in blocks per set, averaging 2.00.
  • The Warriors have accumulated a conference-high 146 aces thanks to Haley Burdo's 36 (second in CCAA) and Chelsey Berry's 26 (eighth in CCAA).
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, Stan State was picked to finish sixth. 

 

CLASHING WITH CHICO

  • Chico State will host Cal State East Bay on Friday before facing the Cougars on Saturday.
  • In the all-time series, the Cougars hold a 5-3 advantage over the Wildcats overall and are 2-1 when playing in the Art Acker Gymnasium. 
  • CSUSM has won the last three meetings against Chico including a four-set victory on Oct. 1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22) of this year. 
  • In that meeting, the Cougars tallied a season-best 15 blocks against the Wildcats. 
  • The Wildcats have lost three of their last four matches with their lone victory being a five-set win (25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 21-25, 16-14) over Cal State Monterey Bay. 
  • Chico State is currently tied for eighth place with Cal State East Bay in the CCAA Standings. The Wildcats are four matches behind CSUSM.
  • The Wildcats rank last in the CCAA in opponent hitting percentage (.243) and team attacks per set (31.78).
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, Chico was picked to finish tied for eighth with Cal State Dominguez Hills.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returned five starters from the 2019 season - Grecia Cordero-Barr (L), Kassy Doering (MB), Micah Hébert (OH), Madison Turner (S) and Emily Vander Weide (OH).
  • Nine will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time in 2021 with the combination of last year's and this year's freshman classes.
  • The 2019 season ended on a high note with the Cougars recording their first-ever CCAA Tournament victory, a five-set thriller over Stanislaus State.
  • CSUSM's 2019 season came to an end in the next match, falling to eventual NCAA Division II National Champion Cal State San Bernardino.
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2019 ranked third in kills per set (13.08), blocks per set (2.12) and digs per set (15.40).
  • Grecia Cordero-Barr was the 2019 CCAA leader in digs per set (4.70) and was second in total digs (437).
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish third.

THE LEONARD FILE

  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her eleventh season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 183-121 (.602) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 16 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 275-247 (.527) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
