CSUSM Travels to CSULA, CSUDH This Weekend

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team will stay local this weekend, traveling to Cal State LA (12-5, 8-2 CCAA) on Friday before sliding over to Cal State Dominguez Hills (0-15, 1-9 CCAA) on Saturday. Both matches have a 5 p.m. start time. 

LAST WEEKEND

  • The Cougars (8-6, 5-3 CCAA) went 1-1 last weekend against Cal State East Bay with the home team taking the win in each occurrence. 
  • CSUSM dropped a four-set decision (21-25, 25-17, 22-25, 19-25) to CSUEB on Thursday afternoon in Pioneer Gymnasium.
  • The Cougars rebounded with a sweep (25-21, 25-23, 25-18) of the Pioneers on Saturday in The Sports Center. 
  • For the weekend, Kassy Doering led the Cougars with 4.00 kills per set, .a 404 hitting percentage (28k-5e-57ta) and four blocks. 

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Cougars are currently tied with Stanislaus State for sixth in the CCAA standings with eight matches remaining in the regular season.
  • Six of CSUSM's final eight games are on the road. The Cougars' final two home games are on Nov. 4 vs. Cal State San Bernardino and Nov. 6 against Cal Poly Pomona.
  • The Cougars are 88th in the nation and fourth in the conference in blocks per set (1.95). 
  • Kassy Doering is leading the charge for CSUSM in blocks, ranking fourth in the CCAA with a 0.93 blocks per set average. 
  • Madison Turner is third in the CCAA with a 10.11 assists per set average, ranking her 38th in the nation.
  • CSUSM ranks fifth in the CCAA in digs (15.11) and kills (12.93) per set.
  • Kassy Doering ranks fifth in the CCAA with a .362 hitting percentage.
  • CSUSM's 15 total blocks against Chico State was the most by a CCAA school this season in four sets or less. Sonoma State tallied 15 against Cal State Dominguez Hills in a five-set match. 
  • CSUSM's 52 kills against Fresno Pacific on Sept. 10 rank the highest among CCAA teams in a three-set match this season.
  • Doering's 15 kills and Turner's 30 assists against Cal State East Bay (Oct. 16) rank the highest in the CCAA in a three-set match.

FRIDAY NIGHT IN LA

  • The Cougars begin their four-match road series on Friday at Cal State LA. 
  • The Golden Eagles hold an 8-3 lead in the all-times series.
  • CSUSM's last win over the Golden Eagles came in 2018 in LA when the Cougars recorded a four-set victory.
  • The Golden Eagles are on a four-match win streak with their last loss coming against Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 2.
  • CSULA dropped a five-set match to San Francisco State while the Cougars came out on a winning side of their five-set match against the Gators.
  • On the flip side, the Golden Eagles snagged a four-set win over Cal Poly Pomona, who CSUSM dropped a three-set match to.
  • Three of CSULA's five losses on the year came in the opening weekend tournament at Point Loma. The Golden Eagles dropped three consecutive five-set matches to Simon Fraser, Azusa Pacific and Regis.
  • The Golden Eagles rank second in digs in the CCAA, averaging 15.29 a set.
  • CSULA's offense is led by two top-10 ranked hitters in the CCAA statistics – No. 4 Karla Santos and No. 5 Emily Elliott – who are averaging 3.67 and 3.55 kills per set, respectively.
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, CSULA was picked to finish second. 

 

SATURDAY STOP AT CSUDH

  • CSUDH will host Cal State East Bay on Friday before facing the Cougars on Saturday.
  • In the all-time series, the Cougars hold a 7-4 advantage over the Toros. 
  • CSUSM has won the last four meetings against CSUDH, recording sweeps in both contests in 2019.
  • The Toros are 3-2 against the Cougars when competing in the Torodome.
  • CSUDH's lone conference win was against Cal State Monterey Bay, a forfeit due to COVID-19 protocols.  Per CCAA regulations, the contest will be counted as a win for the Seawolves in the league standings but will not affect its overall record. 
  • The Toros have only won eight sets this season with three matches going to five sets (Concordia Univ. Irvine, Westminster and Sonoma State).
  • CSUDH has dropped seven consecutive three-set matches dating back to Sept. 24.
  • The Toros rank last in hitting percentage (.125), assists (8.60), kills (9.83) and blocks (1.35). 
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, CSUDH was picked to finish tied for eighth with Chico State.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returned five starters from the 2019 season - Grecia Cordero-Barr (L), Kassy Doering (MB), Micah Hébert (OH), Madison Turner (S) and Emily Vander Weide (OH).
  • Nine will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time in 2021 with the combination of last year's and this year's freshman classes.
  • The 2019 season ended on a high note with the Cougars recording their first-ever CCAA Tournament victory, a five-set thriller over Stanislaus State.
  • CSUSM's 2019 season came to an end in the next match, falling to eventual NCAA Division II National Champion Cal State San Bernardino.
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2019 ranked third in kills per set (13.08), blocks per set (2.12) and digs per set (15.40).
  • Grecia Cordero-Barr was the 2019 CCAA leader in digs per set (4.70) and was second in total digs (437).
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish third.

THE LEONARD FILE

  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her eleventh season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 182-120 (.603) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 16 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 274-246 (.527) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
