CSUSM to Face No. 13 CSULA on Road, CPP at Home

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men’s soccer team (2-7-1, 1-2-1 CCAA) will head to No. 13 Cal State LA (1-7-2, 1-2-1 CCAA) on Thursday at 7 p.m. before returning to The Cage to face Cal Poly Pomona (5-2-3, 2-0-2 CCAA) on Sunday at 2 p.m.

LAST WEEKEND

  • The Cougars went 1-1 last weekend with a 3-2 loss to Sonoma State on Friday before coming up with a 4-1 win against San Francisco State on Sunday.
  • CSUSM lost with just 17 seconds remaining in the second half of Friday’s game as the Seawolves scored the eventual game-winning goal.
  • The Cougars made a day of it on Sunday with Jacob Cuccia and Curtis Collazos each scoring two goals in the victory over the Gators.
  • CSUSM’s 15 shots on goal against SF State were its most since taking 15 against Johnson & Wales (Colo.) in 2014.
  • CSUSM moved into a three-way tie for fifth in the CCAA standings with four points.
  • The last time CSUSM scored four or more goals was on Sept. 30, 2016 when the Cougars defeated Humboldt State, 5-0.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • Jesus Mentado ranks 35th nationally and third in the CCAA for saves per game at 4.60.
  • In CCAA action so far, the Cougars’ scoring margin (.25), scoring average (1.5) and opponent scoring average (1.25) all rank fifth.
  • CSUSM’s save percentage of .821 in conference play is tied for third in the league.
  • The Cougars have the third-fewest offside calls in the CCAA with just 17 this season.

THURSDAY IN LOS ANGELES

  • Thursday’s matchup will be the first between the Cougars and Golden Eagles since 2018 as the 2019 game was canceled due to poor air quality from wildfires in the LA area.
  • CSUSM is 1-5 in the all-time series against CSULA with the lone win coming at home in 2016.

  • The Broncos defeated Stanislaus State 3-1 last Friday before tallying a 7-0 onslaught against Cal State East Bay on Sunday.
  • Nationally, CPP ranks eighth for corner kicks per game (7.00), 18th for scoring offense (2.60), 18th for shots on goal per game (7.50), 20th for total goals (26), 22nd for points per game (7.00) and 25th for shots per game (15.80).
  • The Broncos’ save percentage of .622 ranks dead last in the CCAA and 177th nationally.
  • Paul Henschke has the second-most goals and points in the CCAA with eight and 18, respectively.
  • CSUSM is 1-4-3 in the all-time series against the Broncos and is 1-1-3 at home.
  • In their last meeting in 2019 in San Marcos, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • With the 2020 and 2021 newcomers combined, the Cougars have 16 players wearing a CSUSM uniform for the first time.

  • This season marks the 16th season for head coach Ron Pulvers at CSUSM.
  • Pulvers has a 119-100-26 (.539) record as CSUSM's head men's coach.
  • In 24 seasons as a collegiate head men's soccer coach, Pulvers holds a 245-171-40 (.581) career record.
  • He was 84-42-24 (.640) while in charge of the CSUSM women's program.
  • From 2006-13, Pulvers led both the CSUSM men's and women's soccer teams.
