Cougars Drop Heartbreaker in Double Overtime

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Seven Cougars scored double figures as the Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team dropped a 107-105 double-overtime heartbreaker to Cal State Dominguez Hills in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action on Saturday afternoon in The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half at the 4:20 mark after a three by CSUDH's Kaden Bradley.
  • The Cougars trailed 47-44 at the break after Chase Bowsher sunk a 3-pointer with six seconds remaining in the first half.
  • A fast break layup by Seits gave the Cougars a 55-53 lead, their first lead since the 18-minute mark of the first half.  
  • A Toro jumper by Colten Kresl evened the game at 74-all with 5:39 remaining in the game.
  • A pair of free throws by Seits gave CSUSM back the lead at 76-74 with 4:51 on the clock.
  • Fuller's 3-point play with 1:22 remaining put the Cougars up 85-79.
  • Kresl's trey from the corner cut CSUSM's lead to 85-84 with 26 second remaining.
  • CSUDH's Armstrong Ojunkwu made a second-chance layup to tie the game at 86-all and sent the game into overtime.
  • Fuller opened overtime with a layup to put CSUSM up 88-86 at the 4:45 mark.
  • After Ojunkwu evened the game once again at 88-all, Seits sunk a jumper to put CSUSM back up at 90-88 at 4:03.
  • The Toros took their first lead in overtime at 92-91 on Ojunkwu's layup at 3:02.
  • Scalmanini knocked down two free throws to put CSUSM back on top at 93-92 at the 2:40 mark.
  • The Cougars added to their lead after Alex Gil-Fernandez made the front end of his two free throws to make it 94-92.
  • CSUDH's Wonder Smith answered with a layup to knot it once again at 94-all with 1:39 on the clock.
  • After a free throw by Bowsher at the 1:16 mark and a layup by Gil-Fernandez with 25 seconds remaining, Kresl sunk a three with 15 seconds remaining to knot the game at 97-all.
  • Marcus Brown opened the second overtime with a monstrous dunk to put CSUSM up 99-97.
  • After the Cougars went up 101-97, the Toros got a layup by Smith and two good free throws by Gabriel Hicks to tie the game at 101 with 3:30 to go.
  • CSUSM once again went up by four on layups by Seits and Bowsher with 1:33 to play.
  • Four good free throws by Kresl and Smith knotted the game at 105 with 44 seconds to play.
  • After a missed three by the Cougars, the Toros called timeout with 14 ticks on the clock.
  • After a missed jumper by Smith in the paint, Ojunkmu took the rebound and got a layup to go as time expired.
 
FAST BREAKS
  • CSUSM falls to 12-13 (8-11 CCAA) while CSUDH moves up to 12-13 (7-11 CCAA)
  • After trailing for all but 52 seconds of the first half, the Cougars led for 15:54 in the second half and 6:33 in overtime. The Toros led for just 22 seconds total in both overtime periods.
  • This was CSUSM's fifth overtime game of the season.
  • The Cougars broke the 100-point mark for the first time since Jan. 21, 2017, on the road at Cal State San Bernardino. It was CSUSM's first 100-point game at home since Nov. 22, 2016, against San Diego Christian.
  • Fuller came up one rebound shy of 200 for the season.
  • This was the season's lone meeting against the Toros and was the third consecutive loss to CSUDH.
  • The Cougars are still alone in seventh place in the CCAA standings.
 
UP NEXT
The Cougars close out their regular-season road schedule next week with stops at Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off and a 3 p.m. game at Cal State East Bay on Saturday.
