SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team dropped its season opener 8-7 in a nine-inning California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest on Friday to Cal State San Bernardino at CSUSM Softball Field. Game two of Friday's doubleheader was halted due to darkness and will resume at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday before the scheduled doubleheader.

FIRST PITCH
- Prior to the game, special guest, retired CSUSM employee and generous supporter of Cougar Athletics, Fox Russell threw out the first pitch.
- Fox recently retired from the IITS department at CSUSM, where he served the University for over 7 years.
- This past November, Fox showed his continued commitment to Cal State San Marcos when he made an incredible $100,000 dollar donation in support of female athletic scholarships at the University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUSB got on the board first, scoring on a bases loaded fielder's choice in the first inning.
- Brittney Scardina powered a ball to right field that went off the fielder's foot enabling her reach to second base on a single and error while Newhouser scored to even the game at 1-1.
- Nikki Andelin's RBI blooper behind the shortstop put the Cougars up 2-1.
- With the bases loaded and two outs, LeClair and Kat Calderon each drew walks to extend CSUSM's lead to 4-1 in the second inning.
- The Coyotes answered with two runs in the top of the third on Dominque Walker's RBI double to right center and Finn's single to left.
- In the bottom of the third, LeClair knocked out an RBI single through the right side to extend CSUSM's lead to 5-3.
- The Coyotes evened the game in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of two walks and a CSUSM error.
- Neither team scored until the top of the ninth when CSUSB's Diana Gomez cleared the bases with a triple to right field, giving the Coyotes an 8-5 lead.
- The Cougars fought back in the bottom of the frame when Andrea Wood hit a two-out single to left center and Newhouser homered to left center to close the gap to 8-7.
QUICK HITS
- The Cougars drop to 0-1 overall and in CCAA play while the Coyotes move up to 4-0, 1-0 in conference action.
- Cheyenne Alvarez took the loss after throwing seven innings in relief, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and walking two.
- CSUSB's Amanda Ramirez collected her second win of the season after going 7.2 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out four.
- Newhouser hit only two home runs in her freshman campaign, raising her collegiate total to three.
