SAN MARCOS, Calif. – In the 2018 Cougar Classic finale, the Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (2-2) came out ready to fight but fell short in five sets to No. 8 Nebraska-Kearney (4-0) .

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first set contained 16 ties and 15 lead changes as the Cougars closed out the frame with five unanswered points to snag the win.
- The Lopers got hot at the halfway mark of the second set, going on a 12-3 run to collect set two and even the match at one set apiece.
- CSUSM closed the gap to 19-17 after trailing by six on two different occasions, but UNK prevailed to take the third set.
- The Cougars were en fuego to begin the fourth set, jumping out to a 14-7 lead and held on to it to force a fifth set.
- The Lopers took a 4-0 lead in the fifth set before CSUSM cut the gap to 6-4 on a Hébert tip that dropped right behind the block. UNK answered with a 5-1 run to pull away and clinch the victory.
QUICK HITS
- Newcombe notched her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and a career-best 22 digs.
- Kassy Doering recorded a .327 hitting percentage for the weekend, tallying 22 kills on 49 attempts and made only six errors.
- As a team, the Cougars out-blocked their opponents 31 to 25 in four matches.
