SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Sophomore
Abby Callais and freshman
Jaqlyn Newhouser each hit home runs as the Cal State San Marcos softball team defeated Cal State San Bernardino in the twinbill opener, 9-0, on Saturday on the road. The Cougars fell 11-3 in the season finale.
Seniors
Lindsay Cerulle and
Karla Bernal along with junior
Kat Calderon and sophomore
Melody Forstie each had three hits on the day. Newhouser's second home run of the season was a grand slam while Callais crushed a three-run homer her second of 2018.
Junior
Caitlin Vinyard tossed a five-inning shutout, allowing just five singles and striking out three.
GAME 1: CSUSM 9 – CSUSB 0
CSUSM tallied all nine runs in the first two innings. Callais' three-run homer to centerfield was on a change up in the first inning. Freshman
Raven LeClair was hit by a pitch and Cerulle laid down a bunt single to begin the inning.
In the second inning, Calderon and Bernal hit back-to-back singles before senior
Sara Langdon reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. LeClair and Cerulle hit consecutive RBI singles before Newhouser blasted her grand slam, which was a no-doubter as soon as she made contact, clearing the centerfield fence.
GAME 2: CSUSB 11 – CSUSM 3
The Coyotes scattered eight of their 11 runs across the first three innings.
Calderon's RBI double in the second inning after Forstie hit a leadoff single put CSUSM on the board.
In the third, Cerulle led off with a single and later scored on a bases-loaded walk by Forstie. Calderon followed with a RBI single to right field for CSUSM's third run of the game.
Leading 8-3 in the sixth, the Coyotes put together three runs on one hit and a CSUSM error to end the game at 11-3.
CSUSB's Morgan Ratliff went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs in the game.
