CSUSM Wins Opener 9-0, Split Season-Ending Twinbill at CSUSB

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Sophomore Abby Callais and freshman Jaqlyn Newhouser each hit home runs as the Cal State San Marcos softball team defeated Cal State San Bernardino in the twinbill opener, 9-0, on Saturday on the road. The Cougars fell  11-3 in the season finale.

Seniors Lindsay Cerulle and Karla Bernal along with junior Kat Calderon and sophomore Melody Forstie each had three hits on the day. Newhouser's second home run of the season was a grand slam while Callais crushed a three-run homer her second of 2018.

Junior Caitlin Vinyard tossed a five-inning shutout, allowing just five singles and striking out three.

GAME 1: CSUSM 9 – CSUSB 0
CSUSM tallied all nine runs in the first two innings. Callais' three-run homer to centerfield was on a change up in the first inning. Freshman Raven LeClair was hit by a pitch and Cerulle laid down a bunt single to begin the inning.

In the second inning, Calderon and Bernal hit back-to-back singles before senior Sara Langdon reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. LeClair and Cerulle hit consecutive RBI singles before Newhouser blasted her grand slam, which was a no-doubter as soon as she made contact, clearing the centerfield fence.

GAME 2: CSUSB 11 – CSUSM 3
The Coyotes scattered eight of their 11 runs across the first three innings.

Calderon's RBI double in the second inning after Forstie hit a leadoff single put CSUSM on the board.

In the third, Cerulle led off with a single and later scored on a bases-loaded walk by Forstie. Calderon followed with a RBI single to right field for CSUSM's third run of the game.

Leading 8-3 in the sixth, the Coyotes put together three runs on one hit and a CSUSM error to end the game at 11-3.

CSUSB's Morgan Ratliff went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs in the game.
