SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team dropped a pair of nonconference games to Biola on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars fell 2-1 in the opener before dropping a heartbreaking, 10-inning 7-5 decision in the nightcap.
Junior
Rae Camez went 4-for-7 on the day with an RBI. Sophomore
Melody Forstie tallied two RBIs after going 3-for-5 in the doubleheader.
The Cougars open Stanislaus State's Tournament of Champions against Hawaii Pacific on Friday, March 23 at 11:30 a.m.
GAME 1: Biola 2 – CSUSM 1
The Cougars got things started early with a run in the first frame. Junior
Kat Calderon led off with a single down the left line and later scored on Camez's hit that followed the same path.
The Eagles took advantage of a CSUSM error to score two runs in the top of fifth. Andi Hormel reached on the error to begin the frame and Haley Martinez followed with a single. Both runners plated on Jay Perez's double to right center.
Junior
Caitlin Vinyard took the loss despite allowing just two runs, one earned, on six hits in seven innings in the circle. Biola's Paige Austin picked up the win after tossing a complete game, also allowing six hits and one earned run.
GAME 2: Biola 7 – CSUSM 5 (10-innings)
Three times CSUSM took the lead and three times the Eagles evened the game, eventually forcing extra innings.
The international tie breaker rule was enforced in the tenth with a runner being put on second base to begin the inning. Biola pushed three runs across on three hits including a 2-RBI double by Kayla Neff.
In the bottom of the 10th, CSUSM was able to put together a two-out rally with Forstie knocking out an RBI double to right center. A CSUSM groundout ended the game.
CSUSM got things started in the third inning when senior
Sara Langdon scored a run after Biola made a throwing error.
The Eagles made it 1-1 on Areana Ramos' solo home run to left field in the next frame.
The Cougars retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman
Jaqlyn Newhouser hit a one-out single to the gap in right center and sophomore
Abby Callais followed with a walk. Freshman
Janaea Mason crushed an RBI double off the right field wall and Forstie followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
Once again, Biola evened the game with two runs on four singles in the top of the fifth.
Callais answered in the bottom of the frame with a bases-loaded single through the left side to put CSUSM back on top at 4-3.
CSUSM held the lead until the top of the seventh when Biola once again tied the score. Pinch hitter Ari Gonzalez hit a two-out RBI single down the right line.
