Cougars Drop Pair to Cal State Monterey Bay

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team dropped both ends of its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon by scores of 6-0 and 7-0.

Senior Karla Bernal went 2-for-6 and classmate Sara Langdon prevented a CSUMB no-hitter by pitcher Rosalia Keirns with a two-out single in the fifth inning.

Both teams return to CSUSM Softball Field on Monday, March 19 for a twinbill beginning at noon.

GAME 1: CSUMB 6 – CSUSM 0
The Otters jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first frame on a RBI single by Savanna Salyer Kovacs.

CSUMB added four more runs on a CSUSM error and two hits including a double by Courtney Hennings in the fourth inning.

The Otters final run came in the last frame when Salyer Kovacs led off with a double and later scored on Keirns' single.

The Cougars best chance to score came in the seventh inning when freshman Jaqlyn Newhouser hit a one-out double to right field. Machrone drew a walk and Bernal singled to load the bases but CSUMB hurler Hayley Fein (8-7) got out of the jam and ended the game with a double play.

GAME 2: CSUMB 7 – CSUSM 0
The Otters recorded six hits and took advantage of three Cougar errors to put up seven runs in the first two innings.

In the fifth, Bernal reached on a one-out fielder's choice and advanced 60 feet on a wild pitch. Langdon's single was a Texas Leaguer to center field as Bernal moved to third. CSUMB's pitcher Keirns halted the rally with a pop up to end the inning.
