SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team hosts the opening round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in The Sports Center. The Cougar women's golf team is competing in the California Baptist Lancer Golf Joust while the CSUSM men's and women's field teams compete at the Stanislaus State Kim Duyst Invitational. CSUSM baseball and softball are both home Friday and Saturday, hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills and Humboldt State, respectively.

SAN FRANCISCO STATE
  • CSUSM is 2-2 all-time against the Gators.
  • The Cougars swept the regular season series 2-0 after an 86-76 win at home on New Year's Eve and an 86-79 win in San Francisco on Feb. 2. In the two games, seniors Ethan Alvano and Josh Spiers averaged 23 and 17 points, respectively.
  • SF State finished fifth in the final regular season CCAA standings. The Gators lead the conference in field goal percentage (47.7) and third in scoring (76.6).
  • Four players average double-digits offensively including Brantley Bynum who leads the team and ranks third in the CCAA with 15.8 points per game. He also leads the conference in field goal percentage (57.2) while Chiefy Ugbaja is second in steals (1.8).
 
CSUSM BREAKDOWN
  • The Cougars went 1-1 in the final two games of the regular season last week. CSUSM fell to Cal State L.A., 98-96, on Thursday before defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills, 93-78, at home on Saturday night to conclude its regular season schedule.
  • As a team, the Cougars lead the CCAA in scoring (80.9), 3-point field goal percentage (40.1), free throw percentage (75.2) and assist/turnover ratio (1.41).
  • Senior Ethan Alvano continues to pace the CCAA in multiple categories including, scoring (20.7), assists (6.0), steals (2.5) and minutes (35.4). Classmate Joe Boyd is tops in the conference in rebounds per game (9.0) while fellow senior Josh Spiers is second in 3-point field goals per game (2.9) and third in 3-point field goal percentage (43.0).
  • The Cougars rank 19th in the nation in fewest turnovers per game (10.4) and 22nd in 3-point field goal percentage (40.1).

HUMBOLDT STATE
  • CSUSM is 0-7 all-time against the Lumberjacks.
  • Due to heavy rain in Arcata, the two squads only got one doubleheader in last season. CSUSM dropped both ends by scores of 11-4 and 10-2 to then-No. 5 Humboldt State.
  • Rain has been an issue again this season as HSU had to cancel its twinbill against Stanislaus State on Saturday. In Friday's doubleheader, the Jacks took game one 2-1 before falling 4-1 in the nightcap to the Warriors.
  • HSU was picked to finish third in the 2018 CCAA Softball preseason coaches' poll.
 
CSUSM BREAKDOWN
  • The Cougars dropped its four-game series at No. 24 UC San Diego last weekend by scores of 5-1, 10-2, 12-1 and 7-5.
  • Freshman Raven LeClair batted .389 (6-for-11) with two doubles and four runs in the UCSD series. 
  • In the 2018 CCAA softball preseason poll, the Cougars were picked to finish 10th.

CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS
  • The Cougars are 6-6 all-time against the Toros.
  • CSUDH is coming off a 5-4 win over No. 7 UC San Diego in the series finale. The Tritons took three of four games from the Toros.
  • Kai Gomez leads the team in average (.387), hits (12) and hit by pitches (2). Rigo Fernandez is the Toros top starting pitcher and is tops on the team in innings pitched (15.1), starts (3), strikeouts (25) and opponents' batting average against (.154).
  • The Toros rank 11th in the CCAA in both batting (.227 AVG) and pitching (6.67 ERA).

 CSUSM BREAKDOWN
  • CSUSM went 1-3 against Cal Poly Pomona this past weekend in the opening week of CCAA play.
  • Junior Austin Ott hit .357 in the four-game series after going 5-for-14 with a run, double and RBI against the Broncos. Fellow senior, Troy Lamparello (0-1) pitched eight innings, giving up two runs on eight hits in a 2-1 loss on Saturday. Classmate Taylor Greene (3-0) earned the win on Sunday with 5.1 innings pitched, giving up one run on eight hits while striking out three.
  • Senior Tyler Place leads the team in average (.389), hits (14), runs (10), doubles (3) and total bases (28) while tied for first in home runs (3) and triples (1). The pitching staff is led by Lamparello who holds a team best 1.19 era while Greene leads the team in wins with three. Junior Brandon Bachman has recorded two saves, tops on the team.
  • As a team, CSUSM ranks fourth in the CCAA in batting (.283 AVG), eighth in pitching (5.00 ERA) and first in fielding percentage (.982).
