CSUSM Splits on Second Day of D2 West Region Showcase

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team split on day two of the D2 West Region Showcase hosted by Western Oregon in Monmouth, Ore. The Cougars took a four-set match away from Fresno Pacific in the afternoon before falling in four-sets to Chaminade in the last match of the night.
 
CSUSM (3-4) was led by sophomore Madi Anderson who tallied a two-match total of 27 kills and 19 digs. Freshman outside hitter Micah Hébert finished with 16 kills while sophomore Maddy Newcombe contributed 15 kills. Freshman libero Grecia Cordero-Barr posted back-to-back 20+ digs, finishing with a total of 47 on the day.
 
The Cougars conclude their Oregon trip on Saturday, Sept. 9 when they take on Falcons of Seattle Pacific at 3:30 p.m.
 
MATCH 1: CSUSM 3 – Fresno Pacific 1
The Cougars recorded their second victory over the Sunbirds in less than a week after recording a four-set win (25-19, 24-26, 25-14, 25-13).
 
Anderson tallied her first double-double of 2017 with 14 kills and 10 digs in the contest. Hébert added 11 kills and five blocks. Newcombe notched seven kills and a team-best six blocks. Codero-Barr registered 22 digs.
 
In the first set, CSUSM had a nine-point cushion before FPU charged back to cut CSUSM's lead to 22-18. The Cougars capitalized on FPU errors including a service error on CSUSM's set point.
 
The Cougars once again jumped out early to take a 7-3 lead in the second set. Eight unanswered points moved the Sunbirds into the lead. CSUSM evened the match at 17-17 on a block by Hébert and Newcombe. Both teams traded leads before FPU came out on top at 26-24 to even the match at 1-1.
 
CSUSM dominated in the third and fourth set, going on 12-5 and 10-5 runs to end each set, respectively.
 
Recording a season-best 12 blocks, CSUSM led in all major categories except digs with FPU collecting 71 to CSUSM's 58 in the match.
 
For the Sunbirds, Karah Mitchell finished with 14 kills and 12 digs while Marlenie Crenshaw added nine kills.
 
MATCH 2: Chaminade 3 - CSUSM 1
The Cougars kept their momentum going into their second match of the day, taking a quick 12-7 lead over Chaminade in the first set and held on for a 25-16 win. CSUSM would relinquish the next three sets (25-16, 25-13, 25-19) to the Silverswords.
 
Anderson was just one dig shy of a double-double, finishing with 13 kills and nine digs.
 
CSUSM posted its best attack percentage of the season, recording a .417 clip in the opening set with 14 kills on 24 attempts and only four errors.
