This Week in Cougar Athletics: Sept. 5-10

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos fall sports are back in action for the second week of competition with the exception of the Cougar cross country teams who are not competing this weekend. CSUSM men's soccer team will host the lone home event on Wednesday, Sept. 6 when the Cougars welcome Hope International to The Cage. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.

MEN'S SOCCER
Wednesday, Sept. 6 – 4 p.m. vs. Hope International – The Cage

THIS WEEK
  • The Cougars boast a 4-0 all-time record over Hope International and a 3-3-2 all-time record against Biola.
  • HIU enters Wednesday's game with a 4-0 record, notching wins over Soka University of America (3-1), Marymount California (4-2), Ottawa University-Arizona (4-2) and Embry-Riddle of Arizona (2-1, OT).
  • Biola drew a scoreless tie against No. 4 UC San Diego in its season opener on Thursday, Aug. 31 before falling 4-0 to No. 14 Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, Sept. 2. 

LAST WEEK
  • The Cougars made their NCAA Division II debut with a 2-1 victory over Concordia Irvine on Thursday, Aug. 31. Senior Victor Gonzalez and sophomore Parker Hodges scored goals for CSUSM and sophomore goalkeeper Alex Franklin nabbed three saves in the contest.
  • In its first road trip of 2017, CSUSM dropped a 7-0 decision to Cal Baptist who jumped into the United Soccer Coaches (formerly NSCAA) NCAA Division II national rankings at No. 23 this week.

THE PULVERS FILE
  • This season marks the 12th season for head coach Ron Pulvers at CSUSM.
  • He notched his 100th win as the men's head coach on Oct. 7, 2016 in a road victory over Cal State Monterey Bay.
  • Pulvers holds a 102-67-19 (.571) record in charge of the CSUSM men's program and a 228-138-33 (.596) career record.
  • From 2006-13, Pulvers led both the CSUSM men's and women's soccer teams.

THIS WEEK
  • CSUSM enters the week with a 1-0-1 all-time record with Cal Baptist and a 3-4-2 all-time record against Biola.
  • The Lancers of CBU played only one match last week, falling 2-1 to Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday, Aug. 31.
  • It took the Biola Eagles extra time in both of their first games of 2017 to record wins, collecting a 3-2 double-overtime victory at Western Oregon before notching a 1-0 overtime shutout at Corban. 

LAST WEEK
  • Cougars claimed a 2-0 victory over Concordia-Irvine on Thursday, Aug. 31 in CSUSM's inaugural game as a full NCAA Division II member. Senior Karly Dunning and sophomore Lauren Perry each recorded goals in the contests while sophomore goalkeeper Bailey Cockrill made six saves. 

THE RENNEISEN FILE
  • Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his fourth year in charge of the women's program and 12th overall at CSUSM
  • Between 2006-13, Renneisen was an assistant/associate head coach for both the men's and women's soccer teams.
  • As the women's head coach, Renneisen is 21-16-16 (.547) during his four years.

THIS WEEK
  • This will be CSUSM's first meetings with Western Oregon, Chaminade and Seattle Pacific. The Cougars hold a 2-0 all-time record over Fresno Pacific.
  • This marks the second consecutive year of the D2 West Region Showcase with the GNAC five schools (exception of SF State filling in for Alaska Fairbanks) hosting this season.
  • The 2016 D2 West Region Showcase was hosted by CCAA schools. The Cougars went 3-1 on the campus of Cal State East Bay, securing sweeps over Holy Names, Academy of Art and Dominican. Their single loss came in a four-setter to Notre Dame de Namur.
 

PREVIOUS WEEK 
  • CSUSM went 2-2 in its own Cougar Classic this past weekend, recording sweeps over Adelphi (N.Y.) and Fresno Pacific. The Cougars fell to St. Cloud State and Saint Martin's in three sets.
  • Sophomore Maddy Newcombe earned her second Cougar Classic All-Tournament team nod while freshman Micah Hébert and Grecia Codero-Barr collected their first tournament recognition.
 

THE LEONARD FILE
  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her seventh season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built form the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Entering this season, she has accumulated a 133-80 (.624) record at CSUSM that includes four Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Tournament Championships and four trips to the NAIA National Championships.
