Hot Shooting Leads to 94-76 CSUSM Win Over Stanislaus State

TURLOCK, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team made 14 3-pointers to defeat Stanislaus State by a final score of 94-76 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup, Thursday night at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

The Cougars improve to 15-8 overall and 9-6 in conference play. The Warriors drop to 6-17 overall and 3-13 in the CCAA.

CSUSM shot 56.1 percent (37-66) from the field and 66.7 percent (14-21) from behind the arc. The Cougars limited Stan State to 44.3 percent (27-61) shooting on field goals and 38.5 percent (10-26) on 3-pointers. CSUSM forced the Warriors to commit 17 turnovers.

"It was a good game for us tonight," said head coach B.J. Foster. "I thought our focus on the defensive side of the ball was much better. It was a good road win."

Junior guard Brian Wright scored a game-high 18 points and dished out five assists. Junior forward Joe Boyd collected his 11th double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Ethan Alvano tied a school record for most assists in a game, set by Blake Nash against Bethesda University during the 2014-15 season, with 14 assists to go along with 15 points and five steals. It is Alvano's third double-double of the season. Junior guard Josh Spiers pitched in 12 points and senior guard Dayton Boddie contributed 10 points and four rebounds off the bench.

Joey Bennett and Jaelen Ragsdale were Stan State's leading scorers with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Kyle Gouvela grabbed a double-double for the Warriors with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

A Boyd layup 48 seconds into the game gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead as they never looked back and didn't trail the rest of the way. CSUSM led by 16 points at halftime, 43-27, as senior guard Devin Koeplin nailed a 3-pointer with time winding before the buzzer.

The Cougars grabbed their biggest advantage of the game, 74-44, with a Wright dunk. The Warriors closed the gap to 17 points on two occasions, but it would be the closest they would get as CSUSM cruised the rest of the way to ultimately prevail by 18.

The Cougars will have a day off before continuing their road trip with a matchup against Chico State on Saturday, Feb. 11. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
