COSTA MESA, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos softball team could only muster two hits as the Cougars were defeated against Vanguard by a final score of 5-0 in a non-conference road matchup, Friday at VU Softball Field. The second game of the doubleheader was canceled due to the first game being postponed because of weather.
CSUSM starts the season at 0-1. Vanguard begins its campaign at 1-0.

Lindsay Cerulle were the only two Cougars who recorded a hit. Senior pitcher
Amanda Horbasch (0-1) gave up four earned runs in 1.1 innings pitched. Freshman pitcher
Cheyenne Alvarez came in relief for the next 2.2 innings and gave up one run. Senior pitcher
Ashley Dagenais threw the last two innings and gave up only one hit, striking out four.
Vanguard pitcher Kolbi Tonini threw a scoreless seven frames with four strikeouts. Taylor Wilson led the Lions with three hits and two runs. Morgan Piblin compiled in three hits, one run and one RBI.
Vanguard plated four in the second and one in the fourth for their five runs.
The Cougars will play their home opener on Saturday, February 4 when they host San Diego Christian in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
