SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team took down Cal State East Bay, 93-78, in the Cougars' first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) conference game of the season on Thursday night at The Sports Center.
The Cougars took a 44-31 advantage into halftime and eventually had their largest lead of the night at 13:04 left to play when senior
Tanner Waldrip connected on a free throw to extend the gap to 23 points. CSUSM went 33-of-55 (60.0 percent) from the field including a season-high 17 made 3-pointers (17-of-28). Senior
Josh Spiers finished with a team-high 21 points and had five rebounds.
CSUSM improves to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in CCAA play while the Pioneers drop to 3-5, 1-3 CCAA following the loss.
Four Cougars finished in double-digits including senior
Brian Wright who collected a new career-high with 21 points after going 8-of-10 from the field with six rebounds and six assists in a team-high 31 minutes played. Senior
Ethan Alvano tallied 15 points and eight assists while classmate
Joe Boyd went 5-of-9 shooting with 15 points and seven rebounds.
CSUSM forced 17 turnovers from CSUEB including five steals from Alvano. They also won the points off turnover battle, 22-16.
The Cougars held CSUEB's leading scorer Druce Asah to just eight points. Drew Bender had a team-high 15 points.
