HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team punched its ticket to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament with a 3-2 overtime victory at Cal State East Bay on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Stadium to conclude its regular season.
CSUSM will take on Chico State on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 1:30 p.m. in the first round of the 2017 CCAA Tournament. This is the first ever CCAA conference tournament berth for CSUSM soccer.
After a scoreless first half, the Cougars and Pioneers combined to score five goals in the second half and overtime. Sophomore
Lauren Perry received a ball off a corner kick and was able to head it above the keeper to the back of the net for her second goal of the season and the game-winner in the 106th minute of double-overtime.
CSUSM improves to 8-6-2 overall and 6-4-1 in CCAA play following the win. The Pioneers will fall to 4-12-2, 1-9-2 CCAA.
The two teams went back and forth in the second half, alternating goal for goal. After junior
Jessica Moreno gave CSUSM the first lead of the match, CSUEB's Abby Buitrago responded with her fifth goal of the season, an equalizer in the 59th minute. The Cougars would answer right back as senior
Morgan Simmons scored on a corner kick chance right out in front of the net and able to beat the keeper for her first goal of the season and giving CSUSM a 2-1 lead in the 73rd minute. Sophomore
Madyson Brown was credited with the assist.
Roughly five minutes later, CSUEB's Nae'lani O'neal was able to track down a loose ball, and off an assist by Lauren McDougal, was able to put a shot past the CSUSM defense to pick up her first goal of the season.
The score would remain tied until Perry headed a ball past the keeper for the game-winning goal and second assist of the match for
Madyson Brown.
