HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team dropped the season finale, 2-1, to Cal State East Bay on Saturday in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play at Pioneer Stadium.
The Pioneers scored two late first half goals to carry a 2-0 lead into halftime. The goals were scored in just a minute and 22 second span. TJ Butler scored first at 40:08 after a CSUSM foul was committed inside the box. Grant LaFleur on an assist from Keith Moreno added to the lead with his third goal of the season at 41:30.
CSUSM would get on the board with a second half goal scored by
Spencer Griffith, his first of the season. The goal came on a free kick taken by junior
Bryan Morrison. It was set up from the right side and sent in front of the left-side of the goal where it found Griffith able to head it in off the right post and deflect to the back of the net.
CSUSM falls to 2-12-2 overall and 0-10-1 in CCAA play. The Pioneers improve to 4-12-2, 1-10-1 CCAA.
The Cougars out shot the Pioneers, 10-9, for the match while putting eight of those on goal. CSUSM forced seven total saves from Pioneer goalkeeper Omar Coronel but were unable to find the equalizer.
Morrison was one of three Cougars to finish with multiple shots, finishing with three, including two on goal. freshman
Rodrigo Rodriguez tallied two shots, both on target and classmate
Dante Longo had two shots with one on frame.
The Cougars say goodbye to their two seniors,
Victor Gonzalez and
JJ Castillo as this concludes the 2017 regular season schedule.
