Strong Blocking Guides Cougars to Victory Over CSULA

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Behind a season-best 14 total blocks, the Cal State San Marcos volleyball team collected a sweep over visiting Cal State L.A. in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action on Tuesday night at The Sports Center. Final scores were 25-21, 25-20 and 25-18.

The Cougars (9-7, 6-2 CCAA) sit in third place in the CCAA South Division standings and the Golden Eagles (8-8, 4-4 CCAA) are right behind them in fourth place.

Junior middle blocker Faith Fortuné had a career-night, tallying a career-best nine blocks in the match while becoming CSUSM's new career block assist leader with 203 in her three seasons. She bypassed previous record holder Erin Talafus's 196 block assists. Fortuné is 14 total blocks away from claiming the career total blocks record at CSUSM from Talafus.

Also contributing to the CSUSM blocks were junior outside hitter Lauren Lee and sophomore middle blocker Maddy Newcombe who had six and five, respectively. Sophomore outside hitter Madi Anderson tallied a match-high 10 kills and freshman libero Grecia Cordero-Barr recorded 15 digs.

CSULA's Karla Santo finished with eight kills and nine digs on the night.

The Cougars welcome Cal State San Bernardino to The Sports Center on Friday, Oct. 13. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
