HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team split a pair of matches Thursday on the first day of the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase on the Cal State East Bay campus. The Cougars swept Holy Names, 25-20, 25-18, 25-21, in the morning before falling to Notre Dame de Namur in four sets, 25-21, 25-18, 20-25, 25-19.
With the Thursday split, CSUSM now stands at 5-2 on the season.
Against Holy Names, freshman
Maddy Newcombe led the Cougar offense with 10 kills and a .643 clip. Senior
Morgan Willis registered five kills and four block assists. Juniors
Ashley Kaylor and
Samantha Flores contributed 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Senior
Brooke Butler tallied her second double-double of the season, finishing with 15 kills and 10 digs against Notre Dame de Namur. Freshman
Aleese Wheaton also garnered a double-double, recording 30 assists and career-best 21 digs. Newcombe blocked a team-best five attacks in the nightcap.
The Cougars face Academy of Art on Friday, Sept. 9 at 11:15 p.m.
