SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team fell victim to an own goal in extra time in a 1-0 (OT) loss to Biola in non-conference play on Thursday afternoon at The Cage.
In the second minute of the first overtime session, Biola played a long throw-in into the Cougars' area.
Andrew Stalboerger rose to attempt to clear the ball out, but it was headed back toward the six by
Parker Hodges.
Jacob Stolmeier, in a last-ditch effort to clear the ball away from Devin Leon, had the ball skip off the back of his head and past his own goalkeeper.
The loss drops the Cougars to 0-2-0 overall. Biola, ranked No. 11 in the NAIA, moves to 3-1-0 overall.
"I thought we played really hard. Every person and every team goes through ups and downs. This is going to test us as a team and me as a coach. We have to deal with this adversity to get better and to get on the right side of things," said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers.
Both teams had solid looks in regulation to put a goal on the board. Biola's True Tamplin and Jarrett Pugh each had one-on-ones deep in the box, but CSUSM goalkeeper
Justin Tesar was up to the challenge on both occasions.
Richard Flores found some space at the top of the box when the teams returned from halftime, but his low shot was corralled by Igor Puglia.
Zach Olow beat his man around the left side late in the stanza and attempted a firm shot to the short post, but Puglia was equal to it.
The Cougars return to the field on Monday, Sept. 12 against St. Martin's at 1:30 p.m. in The Cage.
