SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Led by senior
Brooke Butler and sophomore
Lauren Lee, the Cal State San Marcos volleyball team swept (25-18, 25-16, 25-22) Johnson & Wales University on the first day of the Cougars Classic in The Sports Center.
Helping the Cougars (2-0) pick up their second win of the season, Butler and Lee each tallied nine hits. Freshman
Maddy Newcombe recorded seven kills and hit a .417 clip. As a team, CSUSM out hit JWU (4-8) .241 to .063. The Cougars remain a perfect 5-0 all-time against the Wildcats.
"Our team took another step forward tonight, our systems are being tested and we are responding in big ways," said head coach
Andrea Leonard. "I am very happy with our execution on offense and our poise on defense."
Freshman
Aleese Wheaton registered her first career double-double with 18 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore
Faith Fortune blocked a match-high five balls.
JWU was led by Kelley McLain and Erin Sosnowchik, who recorded nine and six kills, respectively.
CSUSM closes out the Cougar Classic on Saturday with a noon match against Westmont before the tournament finale at 6 p.m. against Fort Lewis.
