CSUSM Hosts Cougar Classic in First Sports Center Action

The Cougars host La Sierra on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 4 PM in the first-ever match in The Sports Center.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team kicks off a new era this week by playing in the first-ever match in The Sports Center on Thursday before hosting the two-day CSUSM Cougar Classic on Friday and Saturday.

THIS WEEK
  • The Cal State San Marcos Department of Athletics will open its brand new facility, The Sports Center. The ribbon cutting for The Sports Center is slated for noon on Thursday, Sept. 1. 
  • The Cougars take the court for the first time in their new home against La Sierra at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept 1.
  • CSUSM hosts the Cougar Classic this weekend, opening up against Johnson & Wales (Colo.) on Friday at 6 p.m. On Saturday, they play a pair of matches starting with Westmont at noon before concluding the tournament against Fort Lewis (Colo.) at 6 p.m. For more information, go to the tournament link.
  • The tournament features five teams, Fort Lewis, Johnson & Wales (Colo.), Sonoma State and Westmont, with nine matches being played over two days.

SOPHOMORE CAMPAIGN
  • The 2016 season marks CSUSM's second season competing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
  • CSUSM opens the season with the Cougar Classic, the first home tournament in program history.
  • The Cougars second tournament of the season will be the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase held at Cal State East Bay in Hayward, Calif.
 
FIRST YEAR
  • The Cougars battled last season with sweep at Chico State, a 2016 CCAA tournament qualifier, marking the highlight of the season. CSUSM also registered five-set victories over Cal State East Bay and Stanislaus State.
  • Four-year starter and three-time NAIA All-American Taylor DeGraaf and transfer Jordan Banich were the only two Cougars that graduated in 2015.

THE CCAA CONFERENCE
  • Cal State San Marcos is a part of the 13-team CCAA Conference, made up of 12 Cal State institutions and UC San Diego
  • The CCAA is one of the premier NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. Its teams have won more national championships (153) than any other conference.
