SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Caylyn Rodriguez hit a walk-off home run in game one of the Cal State San Marcos softball team's split with Cal State Monterey Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) on Friday afternoon at CSUSM Softball Field. CSUSM prevailed 5-4 on Rodriguez's long ball before falling 5-1 in the nightcap.
CSUSM snapped an 11-game losing streak with the game-one victory and will head into tomorrow's doubleheader with the Otters at 5-19 overall and 3-13 in CCAA play.
CSUSM and CSUMB (10-13, 5-11 CCAA) are scheduled to begin the second half of their four-game set tomorrow at 11 a.m. For any changes due to weather, stay posted to the CSUSM Softball Twitter account, @CSUSMSoftball.
Game 1Trailing by a run and down to her last strike, Rodriguez sent a two-run shot over the right field fence to lift the Cougars to a 5-4 walk-off victory in game one.
After
Lindsay Cerulle drew a two-out walk with nobody aboard in the bottom of the seventh, CSUMB starter Bianca Noriega (3-3) quickly worked an 0-2 count on Rodriguez and was one pitch away from sending the Cougars to their 12
th straight loss.
However, the senior centerfielder turned on Noriega's next delivery and pounded it inside the foul-pole for her first home run since April 14, 2015 and the Cougars' first victory since Feb. 12.
Ashley Dagenais (2-9) earned the win, her first since Opening Day on Jan. 29, after going a complete game while giving up a pair of earned runs and seven hits.
Robyn Alvara led-off the bottom of the second inning with a double off the wall in right field before giving way to
Sara Langdon on the base path. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third,
Tayler Ybarra laced a single through the middle to drive Langdon in and make it 1-0.
Melyssa Bellamy made it 3-0 in the bottom of the third, sending a two-run shot over the left-field fence with one out. It was Bellamy's first home run of the season.
Anneliese Lopez started the Otter offense in the top of the fourth with a solo shot down the right-field line to make it 3-1. CSUMB was then able to load the bases with two outs, but Dagenais got CSUMB lead-off hitter Courtney Varela to ground out weekly to third to escape the jam.
The Otters came knocking again in the fifth, loading the bases this time with one out. However, Dagenais forced pinch-hitter Alyssa D'Agostino to pop out back to the mound before fanning Courtney Hennings to get out of the frame.
A pair of errors by the Cougars allowed the Otters to score three runs in the top of the sixth, two of them unearned, as CSUMB took a 4-3 led into the middle of the sixth.
Noriega was able to retire pinch hitters
Abby Allen and
Amanda Horbasch to start off the seventh, but the walk to Cerulle set the table for Rodriguez's heroics.
Game 2CSUSM starter
Amanda Horbasch (3-10) limited the Otters to just five hits, but four CSUSM errors behind her allowed CSUMB to score four unearned runs in the Cougars' 5-1 loss in game two.
CSUMB scored a run in each of the first two frames thanks to infield errors by CSUSM.
The Cougars cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third, as
Rylee Johnson scored on a double-steal with
Lindsay Cerulle.
However, a three-run fourth inning by CSUMB pushed the Otters' lead to four.
The teams played through a downpour in the final innings, but were able to get both games in.
