SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's golf team took second place as host of the 2016 Cougar Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at St. Mark Golf Club.
The Cougars shot a second-round 19-over 307 and finished with a total of 41-over 617 (310-307) in the 36-hole competition. Point Loma won the team title for the second consecutive season with a total of 28-over 604 (301-303). Claremont Mudd Scripps finished third at 47-over 623 (317-306).
San Diego State's Haleigh Krause fired a 5-under 67 in the final round and took home medalist honors with a score of 4-under 140 (73-67). Krause won the tournament by seven strokes over Margaret Loncki of CMS and Michelle Picca of PLNU.
"It was a solid week for the women's team, I'm happy with the way we played. We've continued to improve this entire spring and I think we're coming around," said CSUSM head coach
Greg Hutton. "I expect that we'll close out the year strong in the tournaments we have left."
The Cougars' rounds of 310 and 307 were the lowest totals of the spring season and their 617 was the second-lowest of the entire year.
Freshman
Joan Park shot even-par 72 in the final go-around and tied for sixth in the individual competition with a total of 7-over 151. It is her highest collegiate finish of her young career and her 72 was her first round of par or better since Sept. 22.
Victoria Smith and
Taylor Coover finished with 78's and
Bergen Benedict wrapped up the final-round scoring with a 79.
Sarah Garcia's 81 was tossed out.
Smith (78-78) and Benedict (77-79) tied for ninth overall at 12-over 156. For the freshman Benedict, it is the lowest 36-hole total of her career.
Garcia tied for 12th at 13-over 157.
The Cougars will play next in the Augustana Spring Fling on March 18 in Palm Desert.
