SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team was held scoreless in both ends of its doubleheader against No. 4 Humboldt State, 8-0 (5 inn.) and 2-0, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Friday afternoon at CSUSM Softball Field.
The Cougars were limited to a combined eight hits, one walk and no extra-base knocks by the Lumberjacks' pitching staff. CSUSM drops to 4-14 overall, 2-8 in CCAA play. HSU improves to 11-1-1 overall, 6-0 CCAA.
CSUSM and HSU will close out their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. at CSUSM Softball Field.
Game 1A six-run fifth inning propelled Humboldt State to an 8-0 five-inning victory over the Cougars in game one.
The Jacks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on
Amanda Horbasch's (3-7) wild pitch. The runner was on third due to an obstruction charge against the Cougars.
Darian Harris made it 2-0 in the third with an RBI single.
CSUSM nearly cut the lead in half in the fourth after
Robyn Alvara and
Brogan Hoenisch singled to put runners on second and third with two out, but Katie Obbema (4-1) got
Tayler Ybarra to fly-out to end the threat.
In the fifth, RBI doubles from Tiffany Hollingsworth, Breonna Bejaran and Cyndi Chavez put the game out of reach. HSU scored its six runs on six hits.
Horbasch struck out four in the losing effort.
Game 2Bejaran's RBI base knock in the fourth and solo home run in the seventh provided the difference in game two.
HSU used a two-out rally in the top of the fourth to take the lead. Harris extended the inning with a double to center and came home on Bejaran's single up the middle to make it 1-0.
The Jacks had an opportunity to break it open in the top of the sixth after loading the bases with one out. But, Harris popped up a bunt to CSUSM catcher
Tayler Ybarra behind the plate, who caught it and snapped a throw to third to force out the runner.
Bejaran then made it 2-0 in the top of the seventh, sending a solo line-drive over the right field fence.
Hoenisch led off with a single in the Cougars' final turn at the plate, but CSUSM could not follow it up with any offense as HSU hurler Madison Williams (5-0) finished off the complete game.
Williams had nine strikeouts in the victory.
Ashley Dagenais (1-7) was handed the loss despite giving up just two runs on six hits.
