CORONA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's golf team took fourth place out of 17 teams at the Cal Baptist Invite at Eagle Glen Golf Club. CSUSM registered 34-over 322 in Tuesday's final round and finished with a total of 66-over 642 (320-322).
CSUSM was 16 strokes back of Cal Baptist and Academy of Art, which both shot 50-over 626. CBU won the tournament on the first playoff hole as all five players parred the extra hole.
Point Loma (322-319 – 641, +65) edged the Cougars by one for third place.
Sarah Garcia and
Taylor Coover each shot 80 for the Cougars, while
Bergen Benedict and
Joan Park each contributed 81's.
Victoria Smith's 82 was thrown out.
Garcia, a freshman, tied for seventh in the competition with a total of 13-over 157 (77-80). It is her highest collegiate finish, first top-10 and lowest 36-hole total since Sept. 21-22's WNMU Fall Intercollegiate.
Coover tied for 11
th and shot the two lowest rounds of her 2015-16 season with a first-round 79 and an 80. Her 23 total pars were third-most in the field and her 1-over total on the par-3's tied for the best in the tournament.
Benedict tied for 17
th at 17-over 161 (80-81).
Smith (84-82) and Park (85-81) tied each other for 31
st overall at 22-over 166.
The Cougars will host the CSUSM Cougar Invitational next week, February 29 and March 1, at St. Mark Golf Club in San Marcos.
