SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team made a late push to find the equalizer but fell just short in a 1-0 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Friday afternoon in The Cage.
Carlos Torres put the Toros ahead in the 63
rd minute with a wonder-shot that found the left top-corner from 35 yards out. From there, the Cougars continually found themselves in the Toro end, but to no avail.
The Cougars drop to 4-4-2 overall and 3-2-2 in CCAA play. CSUDH improves to 8-4-1 and 5-2-0 CCAA.
CSUSM striker
Richard Flores earned himself a trio of dangerous opportunities with less than five minutes remaining. First, he found himself inside the box with a good look from a tight angle on the right side, but his attempt was just wide.
Moments later,
Eric Polland left a weighted pass for Flores at the top of the 18, but his shot was blocked by a defender.
The Cougars earned a pair of corner kicks with less than a minute remaining and sent goalkeeper
Justin Tesar into the box. Each time, the ball pinged around inside the area, but the Cougars could not get a solid foot to it.
The Cougars outshot the Toros 12-7 in the contest.
CSUSM will be home for the final time in 2016 on Sunday afternoon when it hosts No. 12 Cal State L.A. at 2 p.m. Prior to the match, seniors
Zach Olow and
Jacob Stolmeier will be honored for their years of service to the program.
