TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team took down Stanislaus State, 68-60, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action Saturday night at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
With the win, CSUSM improves to 6-5 overall and are now 4-2 in conference play. The Warriors drop to 5-6 overall and 4-2 in CCAA matchups.
Stanislaus State jumped to an early 9-8 advantage to start the game. It would be the last time the Warriors would have the lead as
Akachi Okugo scored the ball on a fast break layup to give the Cougars the advantage the rest of the way. CSUSM increased the margin to eight, 21-13, after a
Collin Host three-pointer. The Cougars led 25-19 at halftime.
CSUSM grabbed its biggest lead of the game, 46-24, after a
Darnell Taylor steal and fast break dunk. Stanislaus State got within seven points, 65-58, with 37 seconds remaining in the game, but the gap was ultimately insurmountable.
Taylor led the Cougars with 15 points. Okugo and
Taran Brown pitched in 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Declan Daly had a complete game with eight points, game-high 14 rebounds and game-best five assists.
Christian Bayne paced the Warriors with 17 points.
CSUSM's next opponent will be against Cal State East Bay on Thursday, Jan. 7 at home. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
