ST. GEORGE, Utah – Andrew Stalboerger's first goal of his collegiate career provided the difference as the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team earned its first win of 2015, 1-0, over host Dixie State on Sunday night at Hansen Stadium.
The Cougars will head back from Utah unblemished with a 1-0-1 overall record. DSU drops to 1-1-0.
In the 28
th minute,
Zach Olow whipped it in from the left side off a dead ball.
Thor English flicked it across the face of goal and Stalboerger, a redshirt freshman who missed all of 2014 due to injury, pounded it past DSU goalkeeper Bradley Trella to put the Cougars ahead for good.
"We were very good today at moving the ball around and exposing [Dixie] throughout the game, particularly in the first half," said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers. "I thought our back four was real solid all night, especially against a squad this dangerous. It's a good result for us and it was good to see a lot of guys stepping up."
Stalboerger and freshman
Jacob Cintas provide one-half of a Cougars back line that also features junior
Clayton Gannaway and senior
Parker Radford. In 200 minutes, the group – which had never played together before this season – has surrendered just one goal so far this season.
Starting goalkeeper
Landon Sherwood was forced from the game at half time after experiencing some discomfort, so
Zach Sheppard finished the final 45 minutes and made a key save to keep the Red Storm off the books.
Louie Farfan, fighting an illness during the trip, started the match and ripped off a team-high three shots.
Santiago Alejandro had a team high three shots for DSU.
The Cougars return to Southern California this week to face Biola (Sept. 10) and San Diego Christian (Sept. 12) on the road.
