Seniors Propel No. 11 CSUSM to Sweep on Final Day of Regular Season

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The five Cougar seniors who were honored for their years of service to the program carried the No. 11 Cal State San Marcos softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Antelope Valley, 9-1 (5 innings) and 8-0 (5 innings), on Saturday afternoon at CSUSM Softball Field.

Katie Wilkinson, Genna Main, Sarah Quiambao, Olivia Lucatuorto and Naomi Amu combined to go 11-for-21 (.524) with three home runs and nine RBI, helping the Cougars end their regular season with a 33-12 overall record.

Wilkinson (13-3) and Amu (4-2) took the victory in each game, respectively, allowing just six hits and a single earned run while striking out seven.

Main, in her first two career starts, went 3-for-5 on the day with two runs scored and a double that turned into an error-aided, inside-the-park homerun.  Amu homered in each game as a part of a 3-for-6, four-RBI day, while Lucatuorto went 4-for-7 with a home run, two doubles and five RBI.

Freshman Amanda Meek went deep in game one and added an RBI double that ended game two in the fifth inning. Robyn Alvara was 4-for-5 and Caylyn Rodriguez was 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and a triple.

Game 1
Wilkinson got off to a rocky start in game one, allowing three hits and UAV's (12-30) only run of the day in the first inning, but she settled down to allow just one hit the rest of the way.

Chelsea Eli-Kido led off with a triple to deep center and scored on Elsie Ramirez's single through the right side. The Pioneers were able to put runners on second and third with one out, but Wilkinson did well to escape the jam with no more damage done.

Main got the Cougars' rally started in the third inning by lacing her career hit into right field. Caylyn Rodriguez then tapped a ball in front of the plate and beat it out for a single, but the throw got away from the first baseman. Main came all the way around from first on the play to make it 1-1.

Lucatuorto and Alvara followed with back-to-back doubles and the Cougars tripled their lead, 3-1.

With a runner on second and Amu at the dish, UAV starter Tabitha Bayer (8-11) started her off with three consecutive balls. However, Bayer made the mistake of putting her next pitch over the plate, and Amu promptly rocketed her 18th homerun of the season the other way to make it 5-1.

Quiambao drew a one-out walk in the fifth inning before giving way for pinch runner Holly Fauria. Fauria stole second before Devin Vanderhoff brought her in with a single to right center.

After Main singled through the left side, Amanda Meek sent a two-run homer over the left-field fence to push the lead to 8-1. It was the first home run of the catcher's career.

Rodriguez then doubled before Lucatuorto knocked her in to make it make it 9-1, ending the game via run-rule.

Game 2
CSUSM kept its hot bats going in the final home game of the season, and Wilkinson and Amu combined to allow just two hits in the shutout victory.

Rodriguez and Lucatuorto picked up right where they left off, as Rodriguez tripled to left center before Lucatuorto ripped her sixth homerun of the year down the left-field line to make it 2-0.

After an Alvara single and walks to Hoenisch and Quiambao, Maya Varela's (1-4) wild pitch resulted in another Cougar run as they made it 3-0 in the first.

In the second, Main led off with a sharp liner down the left field line. It would have been a textbook double, but the throw in from left field skirted all the way through the infield and down the first-base line. Main took off, rounded third and beat the throw to the plate for a pseudo-inside-the-parker.

Fauria walked with one out in the fourth inning before stealing second base. Lucatuorto promptly knocked her home with a single through the left side that made it 5-0.
Then, Amu launched her second homerun of the day and 19th of the season over the left field wall to make it 7-0.

In the fifth, pinch-hitter Lindsay Cerulle was beaned before Meek nearly took another one out of the park to left center. It clanged off the top of the wall, and Cerulle scored easily to ice the game early, 8-0.

The Cougars will now await their seed for Apr. 30-May 2's Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Championship hosted by Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville, Ga.
