Cougars' Campaign Ends in NAIA Quarterfinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 3-seed Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team fell in overtime, 80-76, to No. 6-seed Dalton State (Ga.) in the 2015 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship Quarterfinals on Saturday at Municipal Auditorium.

CSUSM's season ends at 30-4 overall. It is the second consecutive season in which the Cougars have been knocked out in an overtime affair in the NAIA quarterfinals.

DSC (30-4) advances to play the winner of No. 2 Talladega (Ala.) and No. 7 Pikeville (Ky.) in the national semifinals on Monday.

"It is unfortunate the way it went down," said CSUSM head coach Jim Saia. "We had free throws to win it and we just didn't make them."

Leading by two with 16 seconds to play in regulation, Akachi Okugo went to the line with a chance to make it a two-possession game. However, he missed the front end of the 1-and-1 and DSC raced up the court with an opportunity to tie or take the lead.

Dayton Boddie attempted to steal the ball at midcourt by slapping down on it, but was instead called for a flagrant foul. The dubious classification as a flagrant was huge; CSUSM still had three fouls to give before DSC entered the 1-on-1 phase. However, the flagrant gave the Roadrunners an automatic two shots and the ball.

Sean Tate drained both and the teams went into overtime tied at 70 apiece.

CSUSM never led in overtime, but evened the game twice on two free throws by Camper and a Boddie layup.

Down 77-74, Blake Nash missed a game-tying 3-pointer and the Cougars called a timeout after Tyson Kygar came down with the offensive board with eight seconds left.

Out of the timeout, Nash was triple-teamed above the key before dishing it to Camper under the hoop. Needing a 3-pointer to tie it, Camper instead laid in an uncontested shot to pull within 77-76 with two seconds remaining.

CSUSM immediately attempted to call timeout to set up its defense; however, they did not have any remaining. The team was called for a technical because of the mishap, before the bench was called for another technical.

DSU's Tate made 3-of-4 to clinch the win and advance the Roadrunners to the Fab Four.

Camper led the Cougars with 30 points and 13 rebounds, both career-highs for the senior. Okugo dropped 16 points while Nash finished with a solid line of nine points, six assists and four steals.

"We had a great year," Saia said. "I am proud of the kids. We had a phenomenal experience."

CSUSM trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, but used a 10-0 run to pull within two possessions before a 7-0 stretch over the final 1:54 pulled the Cougars within 40-36 at the break.

18 consecutive points from Camper over the first 10 minutes of the second half kept the Cougars in it.

CSUSM grabbed its first lead since the 18:13 mark of the first half on a 3-pointer by Kygar with 4:44 left in regulation.

CSUSM outrebounded the Roadrunners 42-27. The Cougars shot 52.5 percent (31-of-59) in the game while holding DSU to 43.5 (27-of-62).

CSUSM will see six seniors move on this May: Nash, Camper, Jacob Andersson, Tony Freeland, Wade Collie and Steele Sylte.
