SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team couldn't get things going offensively in Saturday's doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino, as the Cougars fell in both ends of a doubleheader, 6-4 and 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at CSUSM Softball Field.
The Cougars dropped to 3-3 overall, while CSUSB improved to 2-2 on the young season.
CSUSM will be back in action on Sunday in another doubleheader against California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponent Cal State Dominguez Hills starting at 1 p.m.
Game 1The Coyotes opened with two runs in the top of the first inning, as they were able to load the bases after a leadoff single and pair of walks. Caitlyn Olan singled up the middle to make it 2-0.
Melyssa Bellamy's double off the wall brought home
Olivia Lucatuorto to make it 2-1 in the third for the Cougars.
The Cougars would take the lead in the fourth. Lucatuorto tagged a two-out double off the left-centerfield wall to score
Sarah Quiambao and make it 2-2.
Then, with runners on first and third, CSUSB pitcher Cassandra Williams was called for an illegal pitch when catcher Mary Menicucci interfered with Bellamy when being intentionally walked.
Lindsay Cerulle was granted a free pass to home, putting CSUSM up 3-2.
CSUSB answered back in the fifth, as the Coyotes loaded the bases on an infield error, a walk and a single. Olan then popped one down the line for a three-run triple, making it 5-3 in favor of CSUSB. Williams added an RBI single to push the Yotes ahead, 6-3.
The Cougars made a run at it in the bottom of the sixth. Lucatuorto doubled down the left-field line and Bellamy followed suit with a double in the exact same spot to bring home Lucatuorto and pull CSUSM within 6-4 with a runner on second and no one out.
However, reliever Jamie Nelson ended the threat by retiring the next three Cougars.
In all, CSUSM left 11 runners on base in game one.
Williams (1-1) earned her first win of the season, pitching four innings while striking out six, walking five and surrendering a pair of earned runs. Nelson was credited with her first save.
Ashley Dagenais (1-2) was credited with the loss. She took over for starter
Katie Wilkinson in the top of the third inning and worked five frames while allowing five hits, three earned runs and three walks.
Game 2CSUSM mustered just four hits in game two and the Coyotes took advantage of a key error in the top of the seventh to put the game comfortably away, 5-1.
Olan picked up right where she left off game one, as her sacrifice fly brought home Nicole Nobbe to make it 1-0 in the first. Brianna Quintana singled in a runner in the second, and CSUSB took a 2-0 lead.
But then, Bellamy connected with her third double of the afternoon, sending one high off the left-field fence to lead off the fourth. She moved to third on
Naomi Amu's fly out and scored on
Brogan Hoenisch's two-out single to right to pull CSUSM within 2-1.
However, Hoenisch's RBI single would be the last hit for CSUSM.
The Coyotes added three more in the top of the seventh. Quintana reached via an error and CSUSB put another runner on with two-out. Once again, Olan came through, sending a double to left-center to bring in two runs.
Wilkinson (2-1) took her first loss of the season. Just one of the five runs given up was earned.
