SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The No. 1 Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team trailed for nearly the first 30 minutes of Wednesday night's contest, but used a 12-2 run late in the second stanza to catch The Master's College and eventually overtake the Mustangs, 80-75, at Bross Gym.
Tyson Kygar poured in a career-high 20 points, including six three pointers, to lead all scorers.
Blake Nash added 14 points and seven assists, while
Julian Camper added 19 points.
The Cougars earned their seventh-consecutive victory and improved to 21-2 on the season. TMC dropped to 7-14.
CSUSM trailed the entire first half and the much of the second.
Akachi Okugo's 3-pointer drew the teams even for the first time, 49-49, at the 12:36 mark of the second frame. TMC was able to keep its advantage over the next four minutes, until Okugo once again hit a 3-pointer with 8:48 left that tied it, 57-57.
TMC led 61-60, but the Cougars' 12-2 run over the next four minutes put CSUSM comfortably in the lead, 73-63, with 2:59 left.
TMC was able to cut the deficit to five, but a 3-pointer from Kygar pushed the lead back to eight with 1:19 left.
Reid Shackleford drained a 3-pointer to pull within three with 23 seconds remaining, but Nash sealed the game with a pair of free throws with eight seconds left on the clock.
CSUSM will host its final home game on Saturday against No. 8 Concordia (Calif.) at 7:30 p.m. at MiraCosta College.
