SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Melyssa Bellamy hit a walk off three-run homerun in the bottom of the 10
th inning of game one before the No. 12 Cal State San Marcos softball team had its 14-game winning streak snapped in game two on Friday afternoon against Vanguard at CSUSM Softball Field.
CSUSM prevailed 4-2 in game one, matching the fourth-longest win streak in program history, but Vanguard rebounded with a darkness-shortened, five-inning 7-3 victory in game two.
CSUSM moves to 17-4 overall and VU is now 14-2.
CSUSM will be back in action on Sunday at noon with a doubleheader against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at CSUSM Softball Field.
Game 1Brittney Boggs' one-out sacrifice fly handed the Lions a 2-1 lead in the top of the 10
th inning, but their rally was cut short when Taylor Wilson was thrown out at third base by
Caylyn Rodriguez.
Rodriguez was placed on second base as part of the NAIA's tiebreaker rule in the bottom of the 10
th. She moved to third on
Lindsay Cerulle's sacrifice bunt and the Cougars put runners on first and third when
Olivia Lucatuorto was hit by a pitch.
Bellamy, who came into the at-bat 1-for-4, lined the first pitch over the centerfield fence to hand the Cougars the victory. It marked her third homer of the season and the Cougars' third walk off this season.
CSUSM had managed just one hit off Rachel Stalford (6-1) until the sixth inning, when
Naomi Amu lifted her NAIA-leading 10
th homerun of the season over the center-field fence to tie the game at 1-1.
Ashley Dagenais (9-2) pitched her sixth complete game of the season, striking out a season-high six batters while lowering her ERA to 1.73.
Rodriguez and
Brogan Hoenisch went 2-for-4.
Game 2A five-run fourth inning, sparked by a pair of Cougar errors, helped the Lions to a 7-3 game-two victory.
The Lions scored a pair in the second inning on an RBI single by Summer Penner and a bases-loaded wild-pitch from CSUSM starter
Katie Wilkinson (8-2).
Olivia Lucatuorto tied the game, 2-2, with a two-run double after singles by
Karla Bernal and Rodriguez in the third.
Amu moved Lucatuorto to third with a single through the left side, but Taylor Doyle (3-0) struck out the game-one hero, Bellamy, swinging to end the Cougar threat.
Two errors from the left side of the Cougar infield led to a pair of runs for the Lions, and Brittney Boggs opened the game up with a three-run home run to left field to push VU ahead, 7-2. All five of the runs surrendered by Wilkinson were unearned in the fourth.
Robyn Alvara started the Cougar at-bat with a double to right center and Bernal notched her second hit of the game to put runners on second and third. However, Doyle got Rodriguez to groundout to the right side with no runs across.
The Cougars loaded the bases in their final at-bat with one out and brought the tying run to the plate twice, but Doyle forced an easy grounder and pop-out to end the game.
