LAIE, Hawaii – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team will look back on its first contest in Hawaii as what-could-have-been, as BYU-Hawaii outlasted the Cougars in overtime, 88-86, on Friday night in non-conference play at the Cannon Activities Center.
Leading by three with under 10 seconds to play, the Cougars were forced to overtime by a 3-pointer by BYU-Hawaii's Justin Yamzon with 1.8 remaining. Then, down one with fewer than 14 seconds left in overtime, CSUSM had an opportunity to tie or take the lead, but
Taran Brown's 3-pointer from the corner missed off the front of the rim.
It proved to be the Cougars' last gasp, and Ian Harward made 1-of-2 at the line to make it 88-86.
Andrew Bournes had a final go from halfcourt, but his attempt was blocked as time expired.
The Cougars drop to 3-2 overall, while BYU-Hawaii improves to 2-2.
Darnell Taylor scored 29 points, corralled nine rebounds and dished out seven assists. He was 15-of-16 from the charity stripe.
Akachi Okugo added 15 points while
Taran Brown and
Declan Daly contributed 11 points apiece. Daly also recorded a double-double by registering 10 rebounds.
BYU-Hawaii was paced by 30 points from Scott Friel, who scored 22 of them in the second half. Harward had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Cory Lange tallied 19 points while Yamzon contributed 14.
The Cougars turn around to play Chaminade on Saturday night in Honolulu.
