SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Jordan Banich of the women's volleyball team and
Dustin Scibilia of the men's soccer team have been named the CSUSM Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Month for the month of August 2014, respectively.
Banich, a junior from Denver, has been a consistent performer and is the "go-to" player in all six rotations. She is ranked No. 4 in the NAIA in total kills with 147 while ranking No. 23 in kills per set at 3.77. She has recorded six double-doubles in the first nine matches, including a season-best 22 kills and 13 digs in the five-set thriller against Montana Tech at the Biola Summer Slam. Banich's outstanding play helped the Cougars win their final eight matches during the month of August, and CSUSM stands at 9-3 overall.
Banich and the Cougars host their first home match of the season against Redlands on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. at Pacific Ridge School.
Scibilia, a senior from Escondido, scored two goals in the Cougars' season-opening 5-2 victory over San Diego Christian on August 27. His header in the 67th minute broke a 1-1 stalemate to put the Cougars ahead for good before he added CSUSM's final score in the 81st.
CSUSM travels to Vanguard and Pomona-Pitzer this week.
