First ImpressionsCSUSM went down early in its season-opening tilt against San Diego Christian, but rallied with four second-half scores to seal a 5-2 victory on Aug. 27 at Mangrum Soccer Field.
Dustin Scibilia scored twice and
Sullivan Tobin added a goal and an assist in the victory.
Scott Rice and
Eric Lopez scored, while
Yuki Hata and
Diego Fontes added assists. The Cougars' five goals marked the second consecutive season in which CSUSM scored five times in its season opener; in 2013, the Cougars beat Cal Tech 5-0. All-time, the Cougars are 4-4-1 in season openers. To view highlights of CSUSM's win over SDCC, click

Record WatchRice's one-timer off Tobin's corner kick gave the senior midfielder the 15th goal of his career, which is second-most in the CSUSM record books. He now needs four goals to tie Bradley Seidenglanz's (2006-07,2009-10) career record of 19. Lopez, a senior forward, scored the 13
th goal of his career, which moves him into a tie for third all-time along with Brandon Zuniga (2006-09) and Mike Nuovo (2006-08). Lopez and Rice are currently tied for second all-time in total points with 34 apiece, 15 behind Seidenglanz's record of 49.
New Kids on the BlockOn a squad chalked full of returning players, a trio of new faces made their first appearances in Cougar blue against SDCC. Freshman
Bryan Morrison looked dangerous in 28 minutes along the right flank, while fellow first-years
Danny Guzman (13 minutes) and
Richard Cervantes (24 minutes) pitched in on the offensive end for the Cougars. Sophomore
Jacob Stolmeier, who made nine appearances as a freshman, played 13 minutes on the outside and played in the corner kick that resulted in the Cougars' fifth goal against SDCC.
Student-Athlete of the MonthOn the heels of his two-goal performance (and a couple of impressive front-flips), Scibilia was honored as the
August CSUSM Male Student-Athlete of the Month.

Pomona-Pitzer PreviewAll-time record vs. PP: 3-1
