Hot StartThe Cougars are off to their second-longest winning streak to start the season after taking home their fourth straight win in overtime, 2-1, over Marymount (Calif.) on Tuesday in Long Beach. The Cougars won their first five games in 2013 before falling to San Diego Christian in their sixth game; however, SDCC was forced to forfeit that game, so the team's longest winning streak to start the season technically stands at six. CSUSM will have a chance to match it with victories over The Master's College and UC San Diego this week.
Lo' RiderEric "Lo" Lopez's blistering start to the year is a prime reason for the Cougars' 4-0 start. The senior striker has four goals in the Cougars' first four matches and has accounted for half of the team's eight scores on the year. He scored both goals in the win over Marymount. He now has 16 goals for his Cougar career, which is second-most all-time, one ahead of teammate
Scott Rice (15) and three behind career leader Bradley Seidenglanz's (2006-07, 2009-10) 19. He is also second all-time in career points with 40, nine behind Seidenglanz's record of 49. Lopez's game winner against Marymount gave him seven game-winning goals for his career, setting a new program record.
Cougar DoubleheaderPrior to the men's game, the No. 15 CSUSM women's soccer team will face No. 18 The Master's College at 3 p.m. on Mangrum Soccer Field. The Cougars and Mustangs last faced each other during the 2013 NAIA Opening Round in Santa Clarita, when
Jen Hager's header provided the difference in CSUSM's 1-0 victory.
The Master's College PreviewAll-time record vs. TMC: 1-3-3
Last meeting: W, 1-0 (OT) (Sept. 22, 2012)
TMC has struggled out of the gate, losing four matches in a row – three by one goal. The Mustangs finally broke though their last time out, however, with a 3-0 victory over Westminster on Sept. 6. Brett Croft and Humphrey Mahowa lead the team with two goals apiece.
UC San Diego PreviewAll-time record vs. UCSD: 1-2
Last meeting: L, 0-1 (Aug. 28, 2009)
It's been over five years since the Cougars and Tritons last met, but the two squads will soon know each other very well. UCSD hails from the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) –
the NCAA Division II conference that CSUSM was accepted into on Aug. 25. The Tritons are 2-1 on the young season and recently took down Point Loma on the road, 2-1. UCSD is coming off a 2013 campaign that saw the Tritons go 14-3-5 and advance all the way to third round of the NCAA Division II Championship.
Schedule OutlookAfter only hosting three home matches in 2013, the Cougars will be playing on their friendly confines nine times in 2014. On the weekend of Sept. 20-21, the Cougars host No. 24 Biola and No. 23 Rocky Mountain (Mont.) on consecutive days. CSUSM will host their final five games at home versus La Sierra (Oct. 9, 3 p.m.), Bethesda (Oct. 18, 3:30 p.m.), Johnson & Wales (Oct. 25, 2:30 p.m.), Antelope Valley (Nov. 1, 1 p.m.), and Point Loma (Nov. 4, 3:30 p.m.).
