Number 9Head coach
Ron Pulvers enters his ninth year at the helm of the CSUSM men's soccer program in 2014. He's gone 76-48-13 (.602) over his first eight seasons and is 202-119-27 (.619) during his 19-year collegiate head coaching career. Last season, Pulvers became the 20
th active NAIA coach to reach the 200-career win threshold. For the first time during his career at CSUSM, Pulvers will exclusively concentrate on leading the men's team after guiding both the men's and women's programs from 2006-13.
Starting PointsCSUSM graduated just two players from the 2013 squad and will return 10 of its 11 starters from a year ago. Also back is redshirt senior
Erik Mueller, who missed all of 2013 due to injury. He'll likely replace the only every-day starter that moved on in the spring –
Richie Kaiser. Also returning is NAIA All-American
Scott Rice and All-A.I.I. first teamer
Zach Sheppard in net. A.I.I. second team selections
Mason Grimes,
Louie Farfan and
Evan Myers return, as do CSUSM's top two goal scorers
Alex Jaziri (5 goals) and
Eric Lopez (4 goals).
San Diego Christian PreviewAll-time record vs. SDCC: 6-0
Last meeting: Cougars were granted a 1-0 forfeit victory due to SDCC's use of an ineligible player.
SDCC and CSUSM are very familiar with each other. On paper, the Cougars have never fallen to the Hawks, albeit due to a serious technicality. After starting the 2013 with five straight victories, the Cougars fell 1-0 at the hands of the Hawks last season in El Cajon, a game that featured a total of 11 cards – eight yellows and two reds. However, SDCC was forced to retroactively forfeit the match due to the use of an ineligible player.
Schedule OutlookAfter only hosting three home matches in 2013, the Cougars will be playing on their friendly confines nine times in 2014. On the weekend of Sept. 20-21, the Cougars host No. 24 Biola and No. 23 Rocky Mountain (Mont.) on consecutive days. On the road, CSUSM will travel down to La Jolla to play future fellow-CCAA member UC San Diego on Sept. 14 before traveling to face No. 10 Concordia on Sept. 17.
