CSUSM Outlasts No. 18 College of Idaho After Sweeping Bellevue Friday

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team concluded the Biola Summer Slam with two wins, knocking off No. 18 College of Idaho in a five-set victory after sweeping Bellevue (Neb.) Friday morning.

"I could not be prouder of this team," said head coach Andrea Leonard. "We faced challenges head on and learned to play through them."

Final scores in CSUSM's win over College of Idaho were 22-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-15 and 15-12. Senior outside hitter Kelli McLin led CSUSM with 12 kills while registering eight digs. Junior Jordan Banich was one dig shy of her fifth double-double with 11 kills and nine digs.  Senior Alyssa Hubbard matched Banich's kills while senior Alyssa Foster collected her fourth double-double with 45 assists and 15 digs. Freshman Samantha Flores capped off an impressive weekend with a 13-dig performance.

Behind an eight-ace team performance, the Cougars swept Bellevue (Neb.) with scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-18. Foster spread out the CSUSM offense with three Cougars earning seven kills or more. Banich had a team-high 10 kills while Hubbard and McLin chipped in eight and seven, respectively.

"We had multiple players contributing and the results speak for themselves...3-1 on the weekend," Leonard said. "Our composure and execution of our offense allowed us to compete, along with our outstanding defense led by our libero Samantha Flores and setter Alyssa Foster.

"We are continuing to improve which is very exciting!"

CSUSM competes in the UC Merced Holiday Inn Express Volleyball Invitational over Labor Day weekend, beginning with another showdown against Warner Pacific on Friday, Aug. 29.  The Cougars opened the 2014 season with a three-game sweep over the Knights on Aug. 15.
