A.I.I. ImplicationsCSUSM has likely cemented its spot in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Championship, Nov. 14-15, in Clinton, Iowa. The Cougars are currently ranked third in the A.I.I./Independent Conference rankings and are coming off a 7-0 blowout of conference foe Johnson & Wales (Colo). UAV is not ranked in the group poll and has not played a conference match yet this year.
Just a Bit OutsideThe Cougars narrowly missed being included in the NAIA Top 25 for the fifth consecutive week, the national office announced Tuesday. The Cougars received 60 total points in the poll and came in at No. 29.
CoSIDA Academic All-DistrictSenior defender
Evan Myers was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 team, it was announced Thursday. To be nominated for the award, student-athletes must be a vital part of their respective program, hold a 3.30 cumulative GPA and have at least sophomore academic status. Myers, a senior defender, holds a 3.87 cumulative GPA in Biochemistry. He's started all 14 games at right back for the Cougars and has scored twice, even adding an assist. He's automatically eligible for the Academic All-America Team, which will be decided on another vote by CoSIDA members to pare the four All-District Teams down into one Academic All-America squad. CoSIDA is the national governing body of Sports Information Directors in the United States.
This Is Getting RidiculousAngel Mora continued his streak of consecutive matches with at least one assist, running it to eight games after a three-assist performance in CSUSM's win over JWU last Saturday. Mora has dealt out 13 assists with four multi-assist performances over those eight matches. He has already set the Cougar single-season record for assists – currently with a total of 14 – and he has the most assists in the NAIA. In addition, Mora's 15 career assists are a school record.
Tie Me A RiverLopez must have read last week's game preview in which he would have learned that he needed just four points to tie Bradley Seidenglanz's career record of 49. So, that's just what he did. Lopez recorded two assists and a goal in the win over JWU, giving him 49 points for his career. Lopez is second in CSUSM's all-time ranks with 18 goals and 13 assists.
UAV PreviewAll-time record vs. UAV: First meeting
UAV Breakdown: The Cougars and Pioneers will meet for the first time this weekend. UAV is in its first season as a program and is 2-12 in its first 14 matches. After starting 0-9, UAV has won two of its last five. The Pioneers beat Soka University, 1-0, in their last match on Oct. 29.
NotesBryan Morrison scored his first career goal in the win over JWU … It was originally stated that Mora only had two assists vs. JWU – upon review of the game film, that obviously was not true. He had three … Tobin scored twice in the win over JWU and leads the team with eight goals on the season … Tobin's eight scores are the most goals in a season since Brandon Zuniga scored a single-season school record of 10 in 2009 … The Cougars need one win to match the school record of 12 achieved in 2010 and 2006.
Season Finale, Nov. 4 vs. Point LomaAlthough it is Senior Day on Saturday, it is not the last time the Cougars will be on their home field. That will come on Tuesday, Nov. 4 as the Cougars round out the regular season against crosstown rival, Point Loma. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
