SALT LAKE CITY – Jacqueline Lara scored the game's only goal off an assist from Paulina Good in the No. 21 Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team's 1-0 victory over Rocky Mountain on Friday afternoon at Dumke Field on the campus of Westminster College.
In the 20th minute, Good played a ball over the top that bounced in behind the RMC defense. Lara raced onto it and reached the ball with the RMC goalkeeper in a precarious position. She slid to get to the ball first and slotted a shot under the keeper's reach to provide the difference in the game.
The goal ended the Cougars' three-game losing streak and helped CSUSM improve to 5-3-1 on the season.
"It seems like an eternity since we last got a win. I don't know when the last time we lost three in a row," said CSUSM Ron Pulvers. "We knew this stretch of our schedule was going to be challenging and we've played a lot of close games. Our players know they play for a proud program that needs to be represented well."
CSUSM weathered a stretch of six matches in 11 days between Sept. 14-24, in which they dropped consecutive matches to Biola, No. 16 The Master's College and No. 18 Concordia (Calif.). The Cougars hadn't dropped three straight since 2007.
However, the Cougars bounced back against an RMC (5-3-1) squad that they tied 0-0 on Sept. 15 in Las Vegas.
In a match that was played between the boxes, the teams combined for just 12 shots, five of which were on frame. Amanda Sears made two stops in goal for CSUSM to earn her fourth win of the year.
CSUSM has a day off before taking on host Westminster at 9:00 a.m. PT on Sunday.
