WEEK PREVIEW
For the third time in a week, the Cougars will face an undefeated opponent ranked in the NAIA Top-10. This time, it'll be the Westmont Warriors, who enter the contest with a 12-0 record and ranked No. 9. CSUSM swept the Warriors in straight sets in their first ever meeting in 2011, but fell twice last season to Westmont in four sets at home and five sets on the road. The Cougars have defeated four ranked opponents in 2011 and five in 2012, but are 0-3 against ranked opponents thus far in 2013, despite having beaten several talented teams receiving votes but just outside the top 25.
Taylor DeGraaf enjoyed quite a bit of success against the Warriors last season, and will be key for the Cougars as they look to upset Westmont. The junior from Arcadia averaged 20 kills, nine digs, and two blocks against Westmont in 2012.
Both opponents the Cougars will face this weekend are familiar foes, having played CSUSM already at least once this season. Cal State San Marcos defeated UC Merced on the road in August, 25-20, 25-17, 25-19, behind a total team effort where they had five athletes record at least four kills and another five tally six digs. The Bobcats are 5-3 on the year.
CSUSM has swept William Jessup in both meetings this season, 25-13, 25-9, 25-12 and 25-16, 25-16, 25-11. William Jessup currently stands at 2-10 on the season.
