LAS VEGAS – Scott Rice headed in Louie Farfan's free kick in the first minute of overtime to lift the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Great Falls on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars dug themselves a hole just 40 seconds into the match by gifting a goal to Great Falls (3-2). However, Ryan Vandenburg tied it up by slamming home a shot off Thor English's throw-in in the second half before Rice handed CSUSM the lead with a header minutes later.
The Argos then capitalized in the last 10 minutes on a Cougar defensive miscue to tie it up at 2-2.
Moments after the extra-time kickoff, the Cougars drew a free-kick about 40 yards out on the right side. Farfan bent the ball in and Rice rose above a crowded box to head the ball inside the right post.
"We needed a game like this to be totally honest. We need to face those moments where things don't go right for us because they are going to happen," said head coach Ron Pulvers. "I thought we responded well after they got to us early on, and felt we played a strong second half by putting them on their heels."
The win improves the Cougars to 4-0 on the season, the first time in the program's eight-year history in which it has won its first four contests.
Box score will be posted as soon as it is received.
