Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif.— The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team wrapped up their 2013 regular season Saturday evening with a loss against La Sierra on the road. After winning a close first set, the Golden Eagles rallied to take the next three from the Cougars 23-25, 25-23, 25-29, 25-23.
Taylor DeGraaf led the Cougars in both kills (13) and digs (11), while
Alyssa Foster tallied 44 assists, 10 digs, and a team high four blocks.
La Sierra made it clear early that despite having lost the CSUSM twice already this season, they were not going down easy. The Cougars led 23-17 in the first set, but the Golden Eagles nearly evened the score at 24-23 before
Alyssa Hubbard slammed home one of her 12 kills to end the set.
In the second set, Foster accomplished the rare feat of back-to-back-to-back service aces, giving her a game high with three. Yet once again, the Golden Eagles rallied late, turning a 22-20 deficit into a 25-23 set victory by claiming five of the last six points with two kills and three blocks.
La Sierra maintained their momentum into the third set, winning without ever trailing beyond the very first point of the set. The Cougars responded back and led 15-9 in the fourth set, appearing to be on their way to sending the match to a fifth and decisive set, but the Golden Eagles had other plans, coming through again in the clutch and winning the match on an attack error after CSUSM narrowed the gap to 24-23.
CSUSM wraps up its regular season with a 22-11 record, while La Sierra now stands at 19-7. The Cougars will not play again until the A.I.I. Tournament November 15-16 in Clinton, Iowa. The seed and opponent will be announced at a later time, although the Cougars were ranked
No. 1 in the latest poll rating of all the NAIA's independents.Â
