Cougars Use Two Second-half Goals to Complete Comeback Win at La Sierra

Box Score

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team scored twice in the final stanza to overtake La Sierra, 2-1, on Saturday night at LSU Field.

The Golden Eagles (7-5) scored moments before the half to secure a brief advantage at the break.

However, Alex Jaziri tied it with a penalty kick in the 65th minute before Yuki Hata's strike less than a minute later put CSUSM (8-3-2) in the lead for good.

Hata received the ball outside the top of the box and created a sliver of space by pushing the ball to his left. He laced a left-footed rocket from 25 yards that snuck under the crossbar and over the keeper's reach.

"I thought we had moments of some really good soccer," said CSUSM head coach Ron Pulvers. "We started slow, but in the second half we carried the game. La Sierra was pretty direct later on in the game and we did well to settle in but still be persistent."

Hata has a goal and a pair of assists over CSUSM's last two matches.

CSUSM has won two in a row after battling through a 1-2-2 span between Sept. 19 and 29.

For Pulvers, the victory marks his 199th win as a collegiate men's soccer coach. He'll have a chance to join 18 other NAIA coaches from across the country with 200 victories on Oct. 23 at Fresno Pacific.

Including next week's match at FPU, the Cougars have three regular-season bouts remaining before the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Tournament Nov. 15-16 in Gwinnett, Ga.

After facing the Sunbirds, CSUSM hosts Westminster in its home finale on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2:00 p.m. before finishing the regular-season slate on Oct. 29 at Point Loma Nazarene.
