Box Score
POMONA, Calif.— The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team lost in their opener of the Cal Poly Pomona Invitational, falling in straight sets to Azusa Pacific at the Darlene May Gym 13-25, 19-25, 21-25.
Riding a program best eight game win streak and having recently jumped up to No. 10 in the NAIA rankings, the Cougars got off to a slow start against former NAIA opponent Azusa Pacific, who is in their first year of transferring to the NCAA. Azusa scampered out to an 8-1 lead in the first set en route to a .524 hitting percentage for the set.
The Cougars played much tighter in the second and third sets, but we're unable to win a set for the first time this season. CSUSM has shutout their opponent eight times in 14 games.
Despite the loss, freshman
Andi Vordermann had a superb game, recording a team high nine kills in just 14 attempts— good for a .500 hitting percentage.
Taylor DeGraaf also had nine kills for the Cougars (11-3).
CSUSM will look to rebound tomorrow with games against Point Loma Nazarene at 11:00 am and tournament host Cal Poly Pomona at 4:00 pm. The Cougars will wrap up the tournament Saturday with games against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 2:00 pm and Cal State LA at 7:00 pm. All five matches for the Cougars will be against NCAA Division II opponents.
